Reluctant reader dd1 (8) has just finished Ottoline and the Yellow Cat and loved it but now we are stuck for new ones

dd1 (8) has to read to me every night for 10 minutes. She really hates reading out loud, in fact doesnt enjoy reading much at all. She has just read
Ottoline and the Yellow Cat

I feel like emailing Chris Riddell and telling him I love him, she loved it.

I need to find some more books for her. She is frightened off by too much text (although her reading is really improving - there were some hard words in Ottoline which she had a good stab at). We are doing Swap! next. Can anyone recommend any exciting books?

My nearly nine year old ds has never really read for pleasure(apart from football comics and annuals) but finally he has got into reading-
Micheal Morpurgo's Born to Run was the book which made him rush up to his room and avidly read. He is now devouring his other novels.
I agree with cod about not making dc read normal books out loud-it becomes a chore for them and puts them off the pleasures of a good novel.

Dd2 (8) loves the Clarice Bean books, but she does enjoy reading in general, don't know if they'd be hard going for anyone who wasn't as keen on reading.

Clarice Bean a good idea - I actually read it to her a year or so ago but will suggest it again.

She has zero confidence/is lazy and always chooses babyish picture books even though her reading is much better than she thinks

dd1 (who is a good reader) loves the unicorn school series - theyu are rubbish (similar to the fairy books) and can read them by herself.

The Little Princesses series by Katie Chase are better than the Rainbow fairies,

DD2 also 8 and a reluctant reader has just read and enjoyed Flat Stanley.
She is also reading the Junie B Jones books - they are quite simple so she flys through them and feels great (also they are funny). There are load of short Anne Fines that are suitable too - DD has read Bill's New Frock and there is Diary of a Killer Cat as well.

Have had lots of recommendations from friends for the Mr Gum (Gumm?) series of books- not got them ourselves yet but supposed to be v.funny
