My ds is in year 2. He likes Claude the dog series, but we are struggling to find anything else that he enjoys.

He doesn't like football books or 'scary' monster/dragon/ dinosaur books... He doesn't enjoy Horrid Henry, Treehouse books, Diary Of a Wimpy kid, captain Underpants - there's 'stupid' and 'idiot' on every page and somebody gets hurt all the time, apparently. David Williams definitely not his cup of tea...

Anyone able to recommend nice first chapter books, not boring, funny but not rude?

beastquest or dogman?

Pascha · 22/12/2023 22:29

Ds2 was similar at that age. He got on well with the Oliver Moon wizard books. Also the Holly Webb animal stories.

Pascha · 22/12/2023 22:30

Toto the Ninja Cat as well.

MangshorJhol · 22/12/2023 22:31

The Kitty series.
Mia Mayhem (series of 12 short chapter books).

Pascha · 22/12/2023 22:32

And Paddington Bear short stories.

impatientlywaiting2015 · 22/12/2023 22:33

Dogman and Catkid books.

Pascha · 22/12/2023 22:34

You could try him on a Beano too, if he likes funny stuff. It's totally aimed at 7yr olds.

My son loved Pamela Butchart books at that age. They are about a group of school children but cant think what they are called.

Cheeesus · 22/12/2023 22:50

The boy who grew dragons is a lovely series.

It’s a tricky stage, when they just get into chapter books.

Rabbit and Bear. Lovely books if you don't mind the word fart! A bit toilet humour but so sweet and lovely moral etc. similar size/feel to Claude. They made my son laugh until he couldn't breathe!

herbygarden · 22/12/2023 22:51

My youngest, who is 6 absolutely loves Beast Quest too!

endlesscraziness · 22/12/2023 22:51

Toto the Ninja Cat

That sounds exactly like his thing!

Thank you to everyone's suggestions - I will be checking them out.

Mr Penguin series.

PandaCory · 23/12/2023 23:11

My 6yo has enjoyed Olga da Polga, The No 1 Car Spotter, and My Brother's Famous Bottom.

452dr · 24/12/2023 11:06

Thank you!

I already managed to get Mr Penguin books for him from the library. Although he was a bit taken aback by their thickness we've started reading one and he loves it so far. @RedToothBrush

I think Mr Penguin is great for going from small books to something a bit wordier as it's still an easy, fun read. DS loves Mr Penguin.

Dr Proctors Fart Powder, Pippi Longstocking, my 7 year old loves these, and did when he was 6 too. We’ve almost finished all the Indian in the Cupboard stories although I’d maybe only recommend the first one to begin with. Secret seven, famous five, etc. Bear Gryllis series for younger readers. Usbourne classics like three musketeers, Robin Hood.

ladygindiva · 04/02/2024 21:36

Captain firebeard School for pirates, my dd loved. There's more than one in series

Anthony Horowitz's The Diamond Brothers series is good, about a young boy who helps his dim older brother run a detective agency. The mysteries are very sweet and the peril is never serious.

The Eddy Stone series is good too. Very sweet and silly. Eddy Stone and the Alien Cat is the one I remember best. There are two others - one about a pirate and one about a genie. I don't think you have to read them in sequence.

I appreciate the replies and I'm updating our to-read list.

'Sweet and a bit silly' is exactly the type of books he likes!
