My ds is in year 2. He likes Claude the dog series, but we are struggling to find anything else that he enjoys.

He doesn't like football books or 'scary' monster/dragon/ dinosaur books... He doesn't enjoy Horrid Henry, Treehouse books, Diary Of a Wimpy kid, captain Underpants - there's 'stupid' and 'idiot' on every page and somebody gets hurt all the time, apparently. David Williams definitely not his cup of tea...

Anyone able to recommend nice first chapter books, not boring, funny but not rude?

Look up the Dixie O'Day books by Clara Vuilemmy (sp). They are utterly lovely.

Littlenose series

The Jeremy Strong books are pretty good for that age, my son loved the my brothers famous bottom ones. Silly and fun without the 'harsh' humor.

Flat stanley books are also good - chapters aren't too long.
A little bit older now, but my ds likes david baddiel and Ben miller books. He slso.likes dog man, cat kid and bunny vs monkey. When younger liked Mr penguin, Claude and also Mr pug. Also the 13 story treehouse books. And Mr gum.
David baddiel just seemed mean a lot of the time, and diary of wimpy kid just seemed an idiot!

Mr Penguin series of books
Dave Pigeon series of books - mine found these very funny, definitely not rude
The Worst Witch series of books
The owl who was afraid of the dark
Hodgeheg by Dick King Smith - had my child laughing lots

anything by Clara Vullaimy - mine liked the Dotty Detective series

The Hotel Flamingo series is nice and my 7yo really enjoyed them. He sounds similar to yours in terms of book preference.

And agree with PP about The Boy Who Grew Dragons series - a really nice read.

My DD at that age liked books that were silly and sweet, not adventure books. Ivy and Bean, and Clementine, Judy Moody (and there is a spin off with a male character Stink). Also the Ramona and Henry Huggins series has great language as it is an older series, good for you to read to him. Also the Daisy books, I think they also have a spin off with a male character. The Daisy books don't have the best writing but funny and easy to read. Also My Naughty Little Sister and Milly Molly Mandy were hits.

My year 2 boy prefers non fiction and is enjoying the Bear Grylls Adventure series, great mix of fiction and non fiction, and the writing style is quite good for these kind of early readers. He also loves the Magic Treehouse (not to be confused with other treehouse series, this one is about brother and sister Jack and Annie, who find a treehouse full of books, and they time travel to the places in the books. The first one is dinosaurs, which I thought might put off my son as he thinks dinosaurs are 'creepy' but it isn't scary. They are short books, perfect for first chapters, we read one together over one or 2 nights. The language isn't great, even my son is frustrated by the repetition, but we are still enjoying them, and it is a good example to them of why you should use other words than 'said' when writing.

My son loved Pamela Butchart books at that age. They are about a group of school children but cant think what they are called.

I just bought him some of these. But am now wondering do they have a girl main character in all of them? (Hopefully attachment will work)

My granddaughter read to me this weekend from the series Greetings From Somewhere, excellent storyline. 10 book series.

You might want to check out 'Diary of a Worm' by Doreen Cronin, 'Peanut Butter & Jelly,' and perhaps the 'Bink and Gollie' series
