Am particularly interested if it's something he can enjoy being read to him and also reading it himself.

Well, my nearly 7 year old ds who is very book allergic has enjoyed looking and reading the Flannimals books by Ricky Gervais, lots of silly nonsense in there which he likes.

Also the Littlenose books about a caveboy and his pet Mammoth...but then my son is obsessed with Mammoths.

I assume you've done the Horrid Henry's.

Maidamess · 02/03/2008 18:31

Oh, and he was GRIPPED by James and The Giant Peach, altho didn't read it himself, but listened at bedtime.

avenanap · 02/03/2008 18:38

It depends on his reading level. Horrid henry is quite good, I gave my ds joke books to read. He had great fun. What sort of books can he read now?

Twiglett · 02/03/2008 18:39

Mr Gum books
Captain Underpants
Seriously Silly Stories

oxocube · 02/03/2008 18:41

Ds2 was 6 in Oct last year. Is just starting to read by himself for pleasure. 6 is very young IMO

BroccoliSpears · 02/03/2008 19:15

Thank you for these. I shall Amazon them and investigate further.

It's not for my LO, but for my nephew.

He's a lovely little boy, quite quiet. A watcher rather than a shouter. Very interesting in things.

He loves Harry Potter being read to him, but finds them too hard by himself.

He's a bit grown up for the plethora of gorgeous illustrated books on his shelves.

My brother (his dad) says that there is a real gap in the market for books for boys of his age.

They have been enjoying the Just William stories.

captain underpants is fantastic for them to read themselves.

NotQuiteCockney · 02/03/2008 19:18

There's a Viking/Pirate series, by Cressida Crowell, that my DS1 really loved. Oh, and the Flat Stanley books could work?

lucymack · 02/03/2008 19:20

Have a look at Books for Boys here and also Boys Rule which are here

foxythesnowman · 02/03/2008 19:21

My DS is reading Captain Underpants at the mo. He read Horrid Henry (not sure about these, but that phase has thankfully passed). He's just discovered Spike Milligan and his poems for children which he loves!

And he can spend ages with his Childrens Encyclopedia (Usborne).

popsycal · 02/03/2008 19:22

ds1 is only 5 and a half - reads allsirts but his current faves are some cheapo non-fiction books by kingfisher called thing like 'why do stars shine'

redwino · 02/03/2008 19:28

popsycal · 02/03/2008 19:29

choccypig · 02/03/2008 19:29

I'm sure he has probably read The Magic Tree House books, but that's a thought. The Spiderwick series is good for Fantasy.

cory · 15/03/2008 15:44

Flanimals.

barking · 15/03/2008 16:11

Another vote for TIntin, my 4 and 7 year old are very big fans, so much so they want to go to Saudi Arabia and Russia for their hols

trace2 · 15/03/2008 16:17

Celery · 15/03/2008 16:19

another 7 year old Astrosaurs fan here, and Cows in Action, which are written by the same person.

TsarChasm · 15/03/2008 16:33

Littlenose eh? Goes misty eyed at those wonderful Jackanory readings of Littlenose by that Scots bloke (the author?)

Novicecamper · 15/03/2008 16:52

Ds1 reads a bit of Horrid Henry and Captain Underpants but he's far more interested in non-fiction - so he prefers to read Football magazines and books (got some of my brothers' old Man Utd books which he loves!) and he likes reading dh's book on kings and queens or books on animals.

According to his teacher, he is the only child in the class of 30 that got a higher score in his non-fiction comprehension test than in the fiction one.

kaz33 · 15/03/2008 16:55

Astrosaurs books for my 6 (nearly 7) year old - they come with cards that you can collect. Always a winner!

Twiglett · 15/03/2008 16:57

oh don't amazon .. do thebookpeople.co.uk

they currently have the Astrosaurs series for a good price .. amongst others
