Hi,
Does anyone have recommendations for books for my just turned 8 year old. She's in year 3, but always been an avid reader, but I'm finding the books that suit her reading ability are too mature for us.
She's currently on book band dark red which is age 9-11.
We have all the Roald Dahl, Jacqueline Wilson, Famous Five, Far-away Tree, Malory Towers, David Walliams etc etc.
Any hidden gems I'm missing that we can get her for Christmas. She's not interested in Harry Potter unfortunately.

And we have a few Ben Miller and all the Worst Witch series.

And lots of Dork Diaries.

What about some of the classics? Alice in Wonderland, Anne of Green Gables, What Katy Did, The Little Princess might suit her.

Oohh I'll look into those thank you. Princess Diaries looks right up her street.

Pamela Butchart's books are fab, e.g. the Spy who Loved School Dinners.

Saucery · 20/10/2022 18:59

Kita Mitchell’s Grandma Dangerous series.
Emma Carroll.
Clockwork Crow series by Catherine Fisher.
The Land Of Roar, by Jenny McLachlan
Lissa Evans - Wished, Wed Wabbit, Small Change For Stuart and Big Change For Stuart.

DS aged 7 really likes the Laura Ingalls Wilder little house on the prairie, I think he got through the first 4 before they got too old. He also loves Ted Hughes the Iron Man, Paul Biegel's King of the Copper Mountains and Beverley Nichols the Tree that Sat Down. All have quite complicated language, but themes suited for a younger audience.

Chris Colfer’s land of stories series.
dd is 8 and similar to your dd, we are just about to finish the final book. She has really loved them.
the whole set is in the works at the moment for about £15

House with the chicken legs, the girl who speaks bear, midnight guardians, the boy at the back of the class,

PJPatrol · 20/10/2022 19:11

The Land of Stories series is very good.

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 20/10/2022 19:12

Warrior cats
Wings of fire

Thank you. I'll check all of these out.

We've got Boy at the back of the class, but she couldn't get into it for some reason.

She's read some of the Pamela Butchart ones at school and loved them, so I'll check out the others she's written. Totally forgot about those!

The Murder Most Unladylike series is excellent. I think DD started reading those at a similar age, and she had a similar reading age.

ChocFrog · 20/10/2022 19:23

Have a look at Tamora Pierce’s books, starting with Alanna. Absolutely amazing but the publisher doesn’t bother to advertise them.

Or maybe Dick King Smith? Like The Sheep Pig?

PatsArrow · 20/10/2022 19:23

The StarFell series by Dominique Valente is really good!

Four books in the series - first one Willow Miss and the Lost Day.

Completely magical and original. Plus has a great character called Oswin who looks exactly like cat but isn't and his dialogue is so funny

PatsArrow · 20/10/2022 19:24

Sort that should be Willow Moss and the Lost Day

My niece is an avid reader, she's 10. At the moment she's really enjoying The School for Good & Evil. It's also a film on Netflix in case you want to see whether it will appeal to her.

Beachhutnut · 20/10/2022 19:28

Wonder and obviously all the harry potter's

Beachhutnut · 20/10/2022 19:29

Ah just seen not interested. Neither was my now completely obsessed daughter until I read the first one to her

Ridingthegravytrain · 20/10/2022 19:30

At that age I got mine reading more classic books from my childhood. They are well written and great for expanding grammar. I find a lot of current books pretty juvenile and badly written.

Titles she enjoyed were all of the children of green knowe series
Moondial
Tom's midnight garden
Box of delights
The diary of Ann frank
Black beauty
Animals of farthing wood series

Oohhh just been googling and found some Judy Blume. I used to LOVE her!

Warrior cats
Wings of fire

Another vote for warrior cats.
DS moved onto the Redwall books after that (also age 8)

insideupside · 20/10/2022 19:33

Also if anyone would like a book recommendation for something slightly different, she absolutely DEVOURED Kay's Anatomy! I was hearing body facts for weeks!
