Heartwarming (young) children's books

I am looking to buy some children's books for my 5 and 3 year old girls for a special occasion. I am going to write a message inside and I hope it will be something they keep for it's sentimental value. I would like books that we haven't got/don't know but it makes the choosing difficult so would really appreciate some recommendations.

Similar books I'm thinking of are things like Paper dolls, giraffes can't dance, guess how much I love you etc.

Thanks!

Beegu . It's nit a literary masterpiece, not very wordy in fact and very short. It always reminds me though that children see the world in such a different way and make it a much better place. Every time I read it with the littlies at my school it makes me go awww.

Once There Were Giants is lovely, all about growing up with your family, with beautiful illustrations. It's one of our favourites.

'The owl who was afraid of the dark'

Is so sweet, I first heard it read on ceebeebies bedtime stories. It's the one Kate Middleton did, my 6yo loved that it was a 'real princess' reading and 2yo just liked the owls. Very sweet story though and we now own it.

Wilfred Gordon Macdonald Partridge by Mem Fox. Makes me weep (in a good way) and my 3.5 year old loves it.

I love you little Monster by Giles Andreae, makes my well up every time I read it. Not sure if it can really be linked to a special event but it's basically about how even though life can be busy and full of distractions, a parents love is always so strong.
