Book for a 3/4 y o Muslim girl

She is lovely child and I (as a Christian) have given her tiny gifts for two new years like small perfume jar and a candlestick. I have also given her paints and paper for a long journey back to her grandparents' country. She has come to my home with her mother. I would like to give her a book but am fearful of offending her fairly observant parents. Eg. The Christmas Pig would not be great. Any ideas? I would love to give her something scientific or entertaining.

I don't know much about The Christmas Pig, but I think it's just an adventure story featuring a toy pig, and it's been hugely popular.

Anyway, a picture book might be better for a child that young - 'Professor Astro Cat's Solar System' might be suitable.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 30/12/2021 08:35

Maybe not something that references Christmas, but if you want a seasonal book, then Snow Bear or One Snowy Night would be suitable.
Otherwise, you can go wrong with an Usborne Look and Find book.

Sirzy · 30/12/2021 08:37

At that age I would just stick to things like Julia Donaldson or the owl who was afraid of the dark type books.

Don’t over think it.

AlexaShutUp · 30/12/2021 08:38

Surely you're over thinking this? The Christmas Pig obviously wouldn't be a great choice, but the vast majority of books would be fine.

AlexaShutUp · 30/12/2021 08:42

Incidentally, I think the preferred spelling is Muslim.

This, anything non religious will be fine. My 3.5yo loves I Am Bat, Izzy Gizmo, Owl Babies, Whatever Next, anything by Julia Donaldson

Astro Girl is lovely if you want a sciencey theme

mdh2020 · 30/12/2021 09:00

The Singing Mermaid is a lovely story written in rhyme

AppleButterfly · 30/12/2021 09:02

Something from the cat in the hat learning library if you want something entertaining and scientific?
Anything non-religious is fine.

viques · 30/12/2021 09:06

You gave a two or three year old a perfume jar? And now you are worried about unsuitable books. It’s a start I suppose.

I thought the word Moslem was offensive, is that not the case?

FAQs · 30/12/2021 10:40

*apologise if not feel free to correct me.

110APiccadilly · 30/12/2021 11:00

I'd go for a fact book of some sort as I don't see how that could offend. This is a nice one. It's a board book but I don't think it would be too young: shop.kew.org/lift-and-look-bugs

Or there's a set you can get with real recorded bird song (push a button to play) which I'm very fond of.

crosstalk · 30/12/2021 14:34

@viques yes, I gave her a tiny ceramic perfume jar which was ornamental rather than for use. What's the problem?

@AlexaShutUp Is you Moslem/Muslim. Don't know what the differentiation is and whether the first is offensive.

Thanks for all suggestions. Off to get book!

@crosstalk my beloved auntie gave me a tiny ceramic perfume jar when I was about that age. I still have it, it's one of my most treasured possessions and I think of her every time I see it.

I'd go for something like Owl Babies or One Snowy Night.

crosstalk · 30/12/2021 15:37

Got the penguin who can/can't fly and a token so she can choose her own book.

Thanks for all your help.

And saving all your suggestions should I ever have a grandchild!

I wasn’t sure if you’re looking specifically for Muslim targeted children’s books, there’s some here www.littlemuslimbooks.co.uk/shop/ . Otherwise most books won’t offend. It sounds like you are a considerate and caring person in her life, which all types of parents appreciate.

crosstalk · 30/12/2021 16:10

@BakeOffRewatch

Thanks for this. Love the alphabet camel! The local rural bookshop caters for a lot of different faiths etc but is too small to carry everything. I was looking for a science book for 3/4 year olds but they were very limited.

@crosstalk I find museum shops are really good for that type of thing

Planetarium shop.rmg.co.uk/collections/astronomy-space-gifts?_=pf&pf_pt_type=Books&pf_t_collection=Collection_Children%27s

Maritime museum shop.rmg.co.uk/collections/childrens-books

Science museum shop.sciencemuseum.org.uk/collections/childrens-books

Other museum online shops to try like the aerospace museum in Bristol, railway museum in York.

Hi, OP. We hope you don't mind, but we've edited the spelling in your title for you. Muslim is the preferred spelling, as other Mumsnetters have flagged up on the thread.

Happy book shopping!
