I am looking for suggestions for my nephews for Christmas. Both confident readers, i have been told.

My DS is 8 and a good reader. He loves Tom Gates and Harry Potter as well as anything by Roald Dahl or Tom Fletcher but there's a good chance the boys will have those already.

A couple of lesser known favourites are The Impossible Boy, the Marsh Road Mysteries series, or the Legend of Frog series.

drinkwithanumbrellainit · 07/12/2021 19:28

Mine loved the wimpy kid series at that age.

loveablequalities · 07/12/2021 19:31

Amari and the Night Brothers is great. Might be a wee bit too challenging to read themselves? Good to read aloud.

Quornflakegirl · 07/12/2021 19:33

The Fudge series by Judy Blume.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 07/12/2021 19:33

My 8yos current favourite series is the Mysteries on Trains series. Starts with Highland Falcon Thief.

Shes also enjoyed the Roman Mysteries recently.

At 7yo she adored the Adventures of Mr Penguin.

I really enjoyed reading Atticus Claw with them

DaisyDozyDee · 07/12/2021 19:34

Pugs of the Frozen North by Phillip Reeve and Sarah McIntyre is excellent for that age (or any age for that matter). Any of their books would be a good choice, but Pugs is the most Christmassy.

Following!

WorriedMillie · 07/12/2021 19:39

DD (8) loves
David Walliams
Micheal Morpurgo
The Wimpy Kid books
The “how to train your dragon” series
The Christmasaurus
Barry Loser?
Tom Gates? books
Captain Underpants
Anything by Anthony Horowitz

She’s currently reading a Michael Rosen retelling of a Christmas Carol called Bah, humbug!

The horrible histories ones are good!

LiterallyKnowsBest · 07/12/2021 19:39

The Magician’s Nephew remains my all time favourite children’s book - could be the start of a great adventure if they’re not already Narnia aficionados.

‘Ballet Shoes’, and ‘White Boots’ are close behind.

‘Miss Rivers & Miss Bridges’

‘The Wind on the Moon’

‘101 Dalmatians’

Essentially, just recreate the Puffin lists from the late 60s and early 70s and you’ll be grand …

Ozanj · 07/12/2021 19:41

The Artemis Fowl Series
The Alex Rider Series
Roald Dahl
I think maybe the first 2-3 Harry Potter books.
Charlotte’s Web
I really like the Richard Hammond car engineering books for kids

NeedToKnow101 · 07/12/2021 19:42

We really liked the Alan and Janet Ahlberg Burglar Bill and other strange books from that series. One was a about a thieving supply teacher. I'm not sure what age they're for though, tbh.

Kite22 · 07/12/2021 19:54

I loved anything by Jeremy Strong. As did my dc Grin
They also liked Captain Underpants and Some Roald Dahl and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

I think Harry Potter and Anthony Horowitz (both very much enjoyed by my dc) are a bit mature for 7 yr olds as a rule.

Talipesmum · 07/12/2021 19:56

It was all about How to Train your dragon at that age for us.

Echobelly · 07/12/2021 19:59

Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton are super funny
I really like the 'Amazing Esme' books by Tamara Macfarlane as well - funny and charming

Newuser82 · 07/12/2021 20:00

Harry potter is still my sons all time favourite. The illustrated ones are beautiful. Diary of a wimpy kid, how to train your dragon, Greek/Roman mythology, horrible histories, Alex rider, land of stories books, you can get some lovely non fiction books if they would like those? Percy Jackson,

My son loved all of those. And yes to the hilarious Mr Gum

Mine is obsessed with Kay's Anatomy (v funny) and is getting Kay's Marvellous Medicine for Christmas

wtftodo · 07/12/2021 22:04

Wizards of once is brilliant.

SkankingMopoke · 07/12/2021 22:09

DD1 is currently reading The Demon Headmaster at home to me, Dahl's The Witches in school (when they finish their work before the rest of the class), and the Asterix comics to herself in bed, and is enjoying them all. In the last year, The Iron Man, Bill's New Frock, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and Gobbolino the Witch's Cat have proven hits.

pitterpatterrain · 07/12/2021 22:14

Would agree Wizards of Once, the various how to train your dragon
The Bolds

My DC don’t go there but I found this when googling and it has a whole bunch of good recommendations (not sure I will link properly …)

pitterpatterrain · 07/12/2021 22:15

We’ve been working our way through various ones on there - the old Chitty Chitty bang bang and the various new ones also went down well

Icannever · 07/12/2021 22:18

Dog man books, these are comic style books but the only books my boys have read over and over again.

I second this one. My ten year old whizzed through both of these and loved them
Digestive28 · 07/12/2021 23:44

Would second Kay’s Anatomy. Has been read and re-read since it’s been bought. Because it’s non fiction can dip in and out with ease.
