@lots33

The Family at Redroofs - Enid Blyton The Long Winter - Laura Ingalls Wilder Charlotte Sometimes - Penelope Farmer Back Home - Michelle Magorian Find a Stranger Say Goodbye - Lois Lowry The railway Children- E Nesbitt

Loved reading as a child and still reread all of the above.

I was coming on to say Back Home as well. Goodnight mr Tom by the same author seems to be more well known but Back Home is absolutely wonderful. I re read it every year.
Snoopsnoggysnog · 01/11/2021 19:46

Also LOVED Judy Blume and Enid Blyton so much.

dementedma · 01/11/2021 19:49

A book called Pondus the Penguin, which no-one has ever heard of.
Likewise the Little Pete stories by Leila Berg which were read to us in school.
The Mary Plain books.

Wonder if any other MNers have heard of these?

Snoopsnoggysnog · 01/11/2021 19:50

Gosh I forgot about Jean Ure.

KM Peyton - forgot about those too! I loved Pennington and did she also write Dear Fred?

Adored Ramona Quimby, and Anastasia Krupnik.

Mr men

mrsawhite · 01/11/2021 19:52

Loved famous 5. Also animal ark books. And a series called pony stories about a girl in the highlands. Happy days

starray · 01/11/2021 19:57

Enid Blyton, especially The Five Find Outers and Dog, The Faraway Tree, Malory Towers, lots of Enid Blyton. Ones that stand out for me - A Little Princess. I loved the Secret Garden, but A Little Princess really stands out. Also adored Alfred Hitchcock and the Three Investigators.

I had an ancient copy of Mary Plain and the Twins. It used to belong to my dad. I enjoyed it, but Mary certainly thought a lot of herself, didn’t she?

I imagined the Owl Man as being half-owl, half-human until I saw an illustration of him. I was a strange child.

stealingbeauty · 01/11/2021 20:08

Any Enid Blyton, but especially Malory Towers. I had all the MT series and once I’d finished I’d go back to the beginning and read the whole series again and again.

When I got to about 9 or 10 I started reading the Sweet Valley Twins books too.

AdaColeman · 01/11/2021 20:10

As well as many already mentioned here, I loved Anne-Marie and the Pale Pink Frock, Susannah of the Mounties, The Silver Sword, and especially The Emerald Crown by Violet Needham.
Later, I loved The Eagle of the Ninth and that whole series of stories linked by the farm estate on the South Downs and the emerald ring.
But my number one all time favourite is Biggles!

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 01/11/2021 20:10

Famous Five
Worst Witch
Malory Towers

I loved Linnets and Valerians too! Wearing their combinations all winter and the man who lived on the Tor. Though to be fair, even when I was ten I thought it might be a bit dodgy that a grown man waited for the heroine to grow up to marry her.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/11/2021 20:14

Christmas on Exeter Street. Can’t really explain why, so absorbing. All the family children have loved it and are now reading it to theirs at Christmas.
Another called Harvey Angell. Most beautifully written book.

Both by Diana Hensley.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 01/11/2021 20:16

@Itsnotdeep

I loved Joan Aiken too. And Diana Wynne Jones - the Chrestomanci books. .

My favourite book was Playing Beattie Bow by Ruth Park. I just loved it.

When I was a bit younger I loved all the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

I loved Playing Beattie Bow! I haven’t heard it mentioned in years.

Mine are the Chalet School and the Anne books, I think.

Was that the Jinny books? A chestnut Arab called Shantih?
Swingoutsistersledge2 · 01/11/2021 20:20

That's the exact copy I have . Bloody loved it . I will always treasure it as part of my childhood/teenage years . Judy Blume absolutley nailed adolescents. Fabulous .

mrsawhite · 01/11/2021 20:26

Yes exactly those books! Loved them! As was it Sue with her little pony?

TheVolturi · 01/11/2021 20:26

The magic faraway tree and the wishing chair. Then the famous five. St clares. All Enid Blyton! My mum used to buy me a book and I'd read it all in one day! Loved reading, I still do.

TrueRefuge · 01/11/2021 20:27

Winnie the Pooh, and the 'Redwall' - the latter was absolutely fantastic, I adored it and it's probably what made me fall in love with proper reading as a hobby.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 01/11/2021 20:30

Thumbelina and The Magic Porridge Pot were two of my favourites when I was really little.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 01/11/2021 20:33

My children loved The Faraway Tree. Other favourites are The Grotlin, George’s Marvellous Medicine and Billie and The Minpins. Some of the Roahld Dahl stories are available in colour edition which lots of illustrations in colour. They are really lovely books. My son also loved Fing by David Walliams.

dizzydizzydizzy · 01/11/2021 20:36

Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfield
st Clare's books by Enid Blyton

Read them many times

AliasGrape · 01/11/2021 20:42

Another Enid Blyton here, the adventure series was my favourite even though it was blatantly just the famous 5 with a parrot instead of a dog Grin

I read pretty much non stop as a child, I can’t wait to share lots of wonderful books with DD, she’s only a baby still and we enjoy lots of lovely picture books but this thread has given me lots of inspiration for her bookshelves as she grows up.

Lemonsyellow · 01/11/2021 20:44

Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House series. I have them still, and are my comfort reads.

Enid Blyton - Children of Cherry Tree Farm and Children of Willow Farm. Much of my knowledge of animals comes from the former.
