6 year old DS

My DS is about to turn 6 and is a decent reader but not yet reading for pleasure. I feel like we are on the cusp of short early chapter books - he loves all the Julia Donaldson etc but we've been reading them forever and I think he's ready for a bit more. He is easily frightened and prone to nightmares so I don't want to go for Roald Dahl yet.
Can anyone recommend first chapter books that I could read with him and he could read a few paragraphs/pages? He likes to share the bedtime read!

Mr Gum is brilliant.

KarmaViolet · 11/07/2021 21:17

How about the Winnie the Witch chapter books? The Magic Faraway Tree is good for that in between stage too as the language is simple but the stories are fun.

Margaritawithlime · 11/07/2021 21:18

I’ve recommended before but my little boy is 5 and lives captain underpants. The chapters are short, he giggles his head off and it’s interspersed with comic style bits and ‘flip-o-Rama’ which is his fave thing ever.

“Mr Gum is brilliant “

Was also going to say Mr. Gum! Oh, I just did.

(Come on, Engerland Grin)

  • loves! Not lives. Though he lives for them too. Grin
Birdkin · 11/07/2021 21:20

My year 2 class all love The Owl who’s afraid of the dark and might be nice for him as it’s all about overcoming fears :)

The hodgeheg is another popular one

Birdkin · 11/07/2021 21:21

Both simple language and nice animal stories, though there are some implied hedgehogs being runover in the hodgeheg

Musication · 11/07/2021 21:21

Oh thank you lots of great ideas!

He's definitely watched captain underpants with DD so that might be a fun one to hook him in. I remember the Owl Who Was Afraid of The Dark, lovely book

Dick King Smith books are good - the one about hedgehogs, another one that "Babe" is based on.

Orangeinmybluelightcup · 11/07/2021 22:23

These are books you'll read aloud to him? Just checking.
My 6yo Dd laughed out loud at 'daisy and the trouble with..'
She also enjoyed the famous five series - we stopped at some point, they go downhill a bit. I also skipped some of the more dubious 'of their time' bits!!!
We've done a bit of the faraway tree
We've just started the first Harry Potter. Am hoping it's not too scary for her!

BestZebbie · 11/07/2021 22:27

The worst witch series
The bolds series (about animals who live disguised as humans, comedy)
Horrid Henry
Bear grylls adventures
Any/all Dick King Smith

Mincepiesallyearround · 11/07/2021 22:33

My son has been absolutely loving the Daisy and the trouble with… series. He takes himself off and reads them independently, they’re the first proper chapter books (but easy reading) he’s got into.

Musication · 11/07/2021 23:05

@Orangeinmybluelightcup yes largely, although he likes to take a page or a paragraph here and there!

Famous 5 we have all of those- DD enjoyed them independently at around 7. I wish I could read him Harry Potter but I know he would get scared! He's a sensitive soul and a bit of an overthinker. He had a home reader about Fire Safety a few months back and we are still having nightmares about fires...so I'm mindful of reading him anything he could over think.
Don't know the Daisy books but will give one a go!

My Dd's peril level was set at octonauts until very recently!

CarnationCat · 11/07/2021 23:10

Horrid Henry? Lots of books in the series and manageable for this age group.

Fivemoreminutes1 · 12/07/2021 05:30

Flying Fergus
King Flashypants
Jamie’s Amazing Cape Adventures
The Hundred Mile an Hour Dog
Mudpuddle Farm

Daisy books are brilliant and the go from picture books up to chapter books.

Musication · 12/07/2021 06:13

You guys are brilliant thank you. I'll be off for a charity shop rummage later this week!

Claude books by Alex T Smith

CrabbyCat · 12/07/2021 07:17

My DS is at the same stage. I know you said mostly for you to read to him, but my DS is currently enjoying Rabbit and Bear and the Ahlberg Happy Families series which are closer to picture books to himself.

For Enid Blyton, you can get colour short stories of the Faraway tree, the Wishing chair and the Famous Five. For the first two, they are a few chapter long excerpts from the books, covering a particular adventure. Having the pictures and larger writing with less on each page makes them a lot more approachable for DS.

HarrisMcCoo · 12/07/2021 07:20

The Enormous Crocodile isn't that bad. DS is almost 6 and enjoys this book. Go on....😂

Musication · 12/07/2021 09:43

@HarrisMcCoo 😂 I used to love that. I'll give it a whirl but I'm blaming you if he switches his thing-to-be-scared-of-this-week to crocodiles! 😉

My Ds6 is somewhat reluctant to read but loves reading Mudpuddle Farm series by Michael Morpurgo. It has short chapters in each short story and he will happily read a paragraph in turn with me.
