I've been reading my old copies of the runaways and the secret (both by Ruth Thomas) and he loved them. I'm not sure what to try next. I was thinking maybe Jacqueline Wilson as he loved cliffhanger but they seem more aimed at girls and I wasn't sure which ones would be suitable for his age. Cathy Cassidy has written some stuff with boys and girls as the main characters but I think they are a bit too grown up for him.

I have a very reluctant reader and he has LOVED Malamander by Thomas Taylor. He made download the second book immediately and we are half way through Gargantis. He has not willingly engaged with a book for about 2 years read by me or otherwise.

Another plus point is that there was some great language in there and as an avid reader I loved the prose and new words.

He seems to like recognisable fantasy, so will have a look through this list.

DS (age 11) and I have recently enjoyed The Giver by Lois Lowry and The Good Thieves by Katherine Rundell.

Have a look at The Strange Tales of the Alphabet Children - www.thealphabetchildren.co.uk . Hilarious yet dark stories and beautiful illustrations and probably just right for your son's age x

Richmal Crompton (The just William series)
Arthur Ransome (Swallows and Amazons series)
Anthony Buckeridge (the Jennings series)
