I've been reading my old copies of the runaways and the secret (both by Ruth Thomas) and he loved them. I'm not sure what to try next. I was thinking maybe Jacqueline Wilson as he loved cliffhanger but they seem more aimed at girls and I wasn't sure which ones would be suitable for his age. Cathy Cassidy has written some stuff with boys and girls as the main characters but I think they are a bit too grown up for him.

My son is a similar age and is reading A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket.
The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness is a good series too.

The Explorer and/or Rooftoppers by Katherine Rundell.
The Secret Seven
Wolves of Willoughby Chase
Stig of the Dump
The Railway Children
Friend or Foe
Five Children and It
Kensuke’s Kingdom

The Wizards of Once series by Cressida Cowell is really good. There are 4 in the series now.

Podkin one ear series by Kieran Larwood has really gripped my 9 yo with the bonus that I’ve enjoyed it too.

lewes2 · 04/01/2021 17:11

I've just read Kensuke's Kingdom to my Y5 class and they loved it. I'd say any of the Michael Morpurgo books.

missyB1 · 04/01/2021 17:14

Have a look at David Baddiel’s kids books, my ds has enjoyed those. Also some of the Michael Morpurgos.

We have just started the percy jackson series, really good. Loved the artemis fowl books (dd 10 - reads independently every day but I still read aloud to her every night) 'who let the gods out' was a really funny book series.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 12/01/2021 19:40

My DS loved George's Secret Key to the Universe by Lucy Hawkings at that age.

00100001 · 12/01/2021 19:41

Ickabog?

Kid Normal

If he liked the Ruth Thomas it sounds like he enjoys books about ordinary children dealing with difficult circumstances. Try Onjali Q Rauf, particularly The Boy at the Back of the Class and The Night Bus Hero. Also October October by Katya Balen. Almost anything by Katherine Rundell or Frank Cottrell Boyce.

Waterstones children’s book of the month is The valley of lost secrets. It’s a gorgeous story about ww2 evacuees. I’m only slightly biased as my best friend is the author! 🥳.

Malorie Blackman books are great - Thief, Hacker, Pig Heart Boy to name a few

Samantha2020 · 05/02/2021 16:42

My 10 year old likes How to Train Your Parents and a few more in the series. She also likes James Pattersons' books. She reckons these are funny and better written than other popular comics. I prefer books that also have literary values to be honest.

She also likes Eddie, Ellie and Robot Rob - entertaining and well written.

Edge Chronicles

ineedaholidaynow · 05/02/2021 19:57

I used to read all my childhood books to DS, so Arthur Ransome, E Nesbit, The Moomins, Phantom Tollbooth

@RollsRoyceLady
My dc are a bit old for that now, but I've seen it highly recommended on several groups I'm on after their dc had read it. I think your friend should be proud of herself (and get writing more!)

ChittyChittyBoomBoom · 12/02/2021 10:54

@MargaretThursday thank you! I’m delighted for her. The next book is is well underway ☺️.

Voiceofreason92 · 23/02/2021 00:08

I teach Year 5.
So far this year we have read Wonder (amazing book), Kensukes Kingdom, Goodnight Mister Tom, Who let the Gods Out and Clockwork. All HUGELY popular

PomBearWithoutHerOFRS · 03/03/2021 04:50

If you can find them, the "Last Legionary" and " Colsec " series by Douglas Hill went down well with my DSs about that age.
Also the "Barney" books and the " --- of Adventure" series by Enid Blyton.

metalkprettyoneday · 03/03/2021 04:54

Some good ideas here that I will go and look up.
My 9 year old got obsessed with the “ His Dark materials “ series recently . My partner read them too so they must be interesting .
