Please can I have some recommendations for books for 1 year olds - something that DD will enjoy and won't be a one-hit-wonder!

OP posts:
cherrycake · 15/10/2007 13:39

Very Hungry Caterpillar, its perfect!

mrsmerton · 15/10/2007 13:40

Dear Zoo

LadyPenelope · 15/10/2007 13:41

Wibbly pig board books. Also the lift the flap ones.
Kipper also popular.

mrsmerton · 15/10/2007 13:41

I think its more important to choose one that won't have you tearing your hair out when you are asked to read it for the four thousandth time!

ruddynorah · 15/10/2007 13:42

are you taking her to the library? then she can try a few and you only need buy any particular ones she loves.

at that age dd loved the 'that's not my..' books, anything touchy feely.

Iklboo · 15/10/2007 13:44

Any of the "That's Not My" feely touchy books are great

Tigaaaarghna · 15/10/2007 13:45

Hairy mcClary from Donaldsons Dairy.
Peepo.

Good 'stories' plus when you get sick to back teeth of the the 'real' story, lots of good pictures to make up stories/games around. (ds often 'finds' things in the Peepo illustrations rather than being read the text)

wheelybug · 15/10/2007 13:48

DD loved anything with flaps at this age (still does really at almost 3 !) - in particular Dear Zoo. Also M&S did some good ones that had lots of moving bits and these literally got worn out - similar to the 'busy' (eg busy park) series but longer.

crumpet · 15/10/2007 13:48

ds currently loves a book called "Gorgeous" about a little zebra - has to have it every night and goes looking for it

www.amazon.co.uk/Gorgeous-Caroline-Castle/dp/0091768748/ref=sr_1_16/203-6891286-7079905?ie=UTF8&s=bo oks&qid=1192452407&sr=1-16

brimfull · 15/10/2007 13:50

brwon bear ,brwon bear

really good repetition and learning colours, there are others in the series as well.

KM1 · 15/10/2007 13:50

"Oh Dear" by Rod Campbell. A lift the flap book where Buster has to look all round the farm till he finds the eggs. My dcs are 10 and 7 now but I could probably still recite this off by heart! Also the Spot books by Eric Hill (lift the flap). Look out for the Shirley Hughes "Nursery Collection" books - I think these are available separately as little books but you should be able to get them in one volume - fantastic illustrations!

Those board books which you sing along to and have holes to put your fingers through...Old McDonald, There was an old lady....there are others as well.

RosaTransylvania · 15/10/2007 13:55

Helen Oxenbury has books called things like Hiding, Dressing etc that are ideal for one-year-olds.
I like the American classic Goodnight Moon as well and another American author called Sandra Boynton - here

Marina · 15/10/2007 13:56

Peepo, by Allan and Janet Ahlberg
The Baby's Catalogue, as above
Each Peach Pear Plum (ditto)

second Rosa's recommendations of Helen Oxenbury, dd still loves those books as a "comfort read" aged four!

fruitymum · 15/10/2007 13:58

Apple tree farm books - ones for the bath, ones with sounds.

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 14:06

Maisy
and any touch-feel books, like this

francagoestohollywood · 15/10/2007 14:07

"oh dear" was a big hit here as well

TheMadScaryHouse · 15/10/2007 14:10

Second Dear Zoo and the Really hungry catapillar, we are on our second set as DS1 wants them in his room too!

We also love the "its not my" usborne books.

Dig dig digging and choo choo clickerty clak - they have a real rytham to them, as do the Grufello ones

LoRayningNewtsAndFrogs · 15/10/2007 14:10

Cock-a-moo-moo, cant remember who its by but my DS absolutely LOVED it.

RubyShivers · 15/10/2007 14:11

Miffy - Ds loves the colours and bold pictures

Another vote for the hungry catterpillar here, and any of the "that's not my ... (train/teddy) etc

board books or those with flaps for babies to turn are great

MaryAnnSingletomb · 15/10/2007 14:12

Elmer
Lucy Cousins nursery rhyme board books

feetheart · 15/10/2007 14:13

Another one for 'Dear Zoo' and we've just discovered 'Oh Dear'
'Hippos go Berserk' - Sarah Boynton
'The Gruffulo'

MaryAnnSingletomb · 15/10/2007 14:21

it would be very crass of me to recommend my own baby board books (they might even be quite difficult to get as they came out some time ago)
