DS has just turned 8. He’s a free reader at school and likes to read very quickly. His understanding is excellent.
He’s read 7 of the storey treehouse and 12 of the wimpy kid books since his birthday in June. He likes that format- funny, lots of pictures but not picture books IYSWIM.
Any suggestions what next?
I still read to him and we’re on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the moment. We enjoyed the Hobbit in lockdown.

@AnnaMariaDreams
I just published a FREE (for a limited time) ebook on Amazon for ages 9-12 called, “Memory Lane Was Moved”. This might be just the thing for your child to read, especially if he likes middle-school fiction.
Hope this helps!

Broiter United is a really good book. It's about a team of cheats who all come unstuck in funny ways. Found it online and the kids love it!

MooseyMoo · 06/09/2020 14:55

The Boy Who Grew Dragons series - my reluctant reader loves it and reads them on his own.

Varjak Paw

BareBelliedSneetch · 06/09/2020 15:06

Doctor Proctor and the fart powder series
Danny Wallace’s Hamish books
Garth nix - have sword will travel
Terry Pratchett - the short story collections and some of his other younger books
Famous five
Swallows and amazons
Percy Jackson

I highly recomend 'The Land of Stories' By Chris Colfer, if he likes the Harry potter books.
It's been a firm favourite with all the kids i have looked after as my 10 years as a nanny :)

roadwarrior · 08/09/2020 14:06

The Bunnicula series is really good fun and got my 8 yr DD hooked on reading.

mamabluestar · 18/09/2020 23:28

Lots on here that I would have suggested. My DS has just finished reading all of the Hamish books by Danny Wallace

NarcissistsEyebrows · 18/09/2020 23:32

Can't believe no-one has suggested the How To Train Your Dragon series! DD has read them about 5 times, they're probably more aimed at boys in general though, certainly almost all the characters are male and the lead is a wimpy boy.

Pics throughout the books too. She's just persuaded me to start reading one as she loves them so much and whilst there is a lot of 8-yr-old level humour, they're not as bad as i feared

Lat321 · 24/09/2020 19:09

My 7 year old finished treehouse series and a David Williams set recently. Now she's reading Melroy Towers and really enjoying it. Less pictures and more text.

adventuresintheforest · 13/10/2020 21:46

Hi, can anyone recommend any books based on school life for a 8-9 year old? Thanks!

adventuresintheforest · 13/10/2020 21:51

Sorry, i was meant to post a new thread...

Clementine8 · 13/10/2020 22:29

My DS loves the Badiell books and Harry Hill books. He’s also read all the walliams books and harry potter. Badiell and Hill are perfect bedtime reading as they are belly laughter books.

twinkletoedelephant · 13/10/2020 22:31

Never too young for Terry pratchett :)

IwishIwasyoda · 04/11/2020 12:09

I dislike the Pamela Butchart books - I think they are extremely poorly written. David Walliams is awful too. Have you done Narnia? DS is enjoying those and he's just turned 7.

IwishIwasyoda · 04/11/2020 12:10

Recommend the Bolds too. DS loves these

DarkDarkNight · 07/11/2020 18:20

Agree with Mr Gum. I bought the box set for my Son last Christmas and we whizzed through them and both loved them. He was 6 then and ‘got’ a lot of it but I think he will enjoy them even more at about 8.

Lumene · 07/11/2020 18:23

Another vote for how to train your dragon

DarkDarkNight · 07/11/2020 18:24

I’m going to get the the Anthony Horowitz Wickedly Funny collection for this Christmas.

I think I will try some of the Bold books that have been mentioned a few times. I like Julian Clary.

Ronia · 07/11/2020 18:25

The Tom Fletcher books are much loved in this house - not his picture books/dinosaur that popped etc but he novels. The two Christmasaurus ones and The Creakers were devoured by my free reading 7 year.old. They're funny too

Nailgirl · 07/11/2020 18:51

Dirty Bertie
Tom Gates
Roal Dahl
Enid Blyton
Harry Potter etc

TrixieHeliotrope · 30/11/2020 16:48

Roald Dahl, Captain Underpants, Big Nate, the Marsh Road Mysteries (not very well-known but brilliant).
