DS has just turned 8. He’s a free reader at school and likes to read very quickly. His understanding is excellent.
He’s read 7 of the storey treehouse and 12 of the wimpy kid books since his birthday in June. He likes that format- funny, lots of pictures but not picture books IYSWIM.
Any suggestions what next?
I still read to him and we’re on Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the moment. We enjoyed the Hobbit in lockdown.

My 7yo enjoys the Adventures of Mr Penguin. Not sure if they might be a bit young?

MildDrPepperAddiction · 23/07/2020 19:05

How about a series of unfortunate events? My DS loved them. He also loved 13 story, wimpy kid books.

Roald Dahl books
Harry Potter series
Dork diaries
Judy moody books

DD likes David Baddiels Books, they are stand alone not a series she found them really funny.
Birthday Boy - wishes it was his birthday everyday
Person controller - a remote that controls other characters in the book
Parent Agency - Main character wishes his parents were different then gets different ones sent to him by the Agency.
Head kid - child switches body with the mean head teacher
And a car one, not quite sure what that ones about.

QualityFeet · 23/07/2020 19:12

Ricekrispie22 · 23/07/2020 19:55

I swapped my brother on the internet
Middle School series by James Patterson
Iguana Boy
Planet Omar

NormaSnickers · 23/07/2020 20:02

My 8yr old DS sounds similar to yours and loves books by Jeremy Strong, he's written loads including a series - "My Brother's Famous Botttom...." and lots of stand alone books. Also the Mr Gum books by Andy Stanton are great, they're funny and very quirky!

Biscuitsneeded · 23/07/2020 20:03

The Mr Gumm books by Andy Stanton- absolutely hilarious. Or Cressida Cowell's books - How to train your Dragon.

AnneBullen · 23/07/2020 20:03

Definitely tom gates, also the Timmy failure series.

IpanemaSunshine · 23/07/2020 20:06

My 10 year old was a fan of the Wimpy Kid and has enjoyed The Book of Norm series recently and we are now working our way through the Micheal Morpurgo books.

Mayvis · 23/07/2020 20:08

The Pamela Butchart ‘Baby Aliens’ series of books are very good.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 23/07/2020 20:19

Jedi Academy went down well here too

helloworld2020 · 23/07/2020 20:27

Mine loves David Walliams' books, read most of them. In between them he reads Famous Five, different style but also very good.

Great to see other recommendations here!

Musmerian · 23/07/2020 20:28

Joan Aiken is brilliant. Try the Felix trilogy. Exciting but also really well written.

Musmerian · 23/07/2020 20:29

David Walliams books are dreadful. Lazy stereotypes, misogynistic and appallingly written. Only sell because of massive publicity.

june2007 · 23/07/2020 20:33

My son is now 10 but at 9 he started the goose bumps books they are great.

june2007 · 23/07/2020 20:34

Also mine liked David Wialiams.

BlueChampagne · 24/07/2020 09:58

Maudlin Towers by Chris Priestley. What happens when you cross Charles Addams with Molesworth. My now 10yo read them a year or two ago.

Pink13Flamingo · 09/08/2020 22:27

A couple of books that are just out, and are the start of a series about an eight year old boy who meets an alien who is a shape-shifter are great fun. My friends' children have loved them and they have great reviews on Waterstones website.
First one is called "Ollie Meadows and the Defiants" and the second is "Ollie Meadows and the DreamSpinners" They have a map and questions to answer and have lots of small illustrations. Really good fun!

Ohh trying to recall dss likes...

Captain underpants (dd also loves these @ 7)
Beast quest
Perry Jackson
Artemis fowl
Alex rider
David Walliams
The Barry Trotter spoon-fed harry pottwr are good, but he probably ends to have read harry potter first
Roald Dahl ...althiugh maybe too young for the witches yet. dss loved things like Danny the champion of the world, James and the giant peach, George's marvellous medicine etc at 8-9, dd loves the bfg at 7 although not tried many more with her yet

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 09/08/2020 22:33

percy Jackson not perry

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 09/08/2020 22:49

My DD is 8 & has very similar taste in books. She has also enjoyed the Jeremy Strong books: The 100 mile an hour dog.
She also likes The Naughtiest Unicorn series, which is probably slightly more aimed at girls. We read The Witches when DD was 7, & she's not great with "scary" - she was fine.

She doesn't like David Walliams though. She said she thought he was probably a bully at school, & the children in his books are "yucky and mean".

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 09/08/2020 22:53

Depending on the child, some of the Roald Dahl books might be manageable by 7 or 8. DD could manage The Enormous Crocodile, & The Giraffe, The Pelly & Me, at 7. (Reading is her strongest area.)
