Leeds cancelled a drag queen book reading

Just curious as to what the problem is?
I bet most of the grown women on here being nasty take their kids to pantos or let them watch justin who dresses as a women on cbeebies.
Kids dont care at all all they see is a person.
Im sad that this site seems to be constantly used for mums to be horrible.
I for one think leeds ciry council should allow it and guess what if you dont like it dont go.
But youd better stop going to pantos or letting your children watch justin aswell.

Are you saying it was cancelled because of mumsnet?

Magicmama92 · 25/06/2020 13:16

Mums net all ganged up to report it to leeds city council and got it shut down so yes.

The images here are all from Drag Queen story time’s for children.

Do you think this is appropriate for children?

isabellerossignol · 25/06/2020 13:17

Because drag queens are not children's entertainment.

Safeguarding children is not bullying, and frankly I'd question the motives of anyone who thinks it is.

isabellerossignol · 25/06/2020 13:19

Also, people generally don't listen to mothers so I very much doubt that Mumsnet has the power to shut anything down.

And to address your comment, I have never taken my children to a pantomime.

Magicmama92 · 25/06/2020 13:19

Thats not from the company or person who was going to do it though. From what ive seen the person who was going to do it dosnt dress or act inappropriate with the children.
Adults are allowed to stay with the children as well.
And leeds city council will have made sure that the person had all the correct background checks. As they do with anyone around children.

Can somone explain how reading a book is not in a childs interest?
How somone dressed differently means they are harmful?
How is it differnt to a panto or justin dressing as aunt polly?

What do the children gain from having their story read by a drag queen? If, as you insist, all they are doing is reading a story then there is no need for it to be a drag queen.

hercatsanddogs · 25/06/2020 13:22

I could not agree more I think drag queens are wonderful and the name was a play on his own condition.Hes the face of two different autism awareness companies and the inappropriate pictures were from over 2-3years age.People are so clearly ignorant as the things said in a club would never be said in front of a child.Drag has not and will never be about mocking women it's a performance art and the costumes and looks are about fashion not objectification.People on here are so clearly homophobic but mask it by fear and saying that all drag queens are predators. How could you demonise someone who does so much good?

PronounssheRa · 25/06/2020 13:22

Oh, you don't believe the reporting in pink news do you

slipperywhensparticus · 25/06/2020 13:22

Third time a charm for this thread?

We STILL didn't organise a protest

Bufferingkisses · 25/06/2020 13:23

One of the issues people had was that there were no background checks - which is quite usual for this sort of event.

Leeds City Council absolutely should have made sure appropriate background checks were in place. I can see why you would make the assumption that this would be automatic. For future reference it is not.

isabellerossignol · 25/06/2020 13:23

If it's just performance art and not sexual they can dress up a caricatures of men then. Problem solved.

Beerincomechampagnetastes · 25/06/2020 13:24

‘Ganged up’

Op - I think you’ve fallen in with the wrong crowd.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 25/06/2020 13:25

Because drag queens are adult entertainment. Just because they are reading a kids book doesn't make it appropriate for children.
You are VERY angry. Do you do drag?

FreeKitties · 25/06/2020 13:25

If you can’t understand why people are uncomfortable that an adult entertainer should be participating in an event for children as their adult entertainer persona then you need some safeguarding training.

isabellerossignol · 25/06/2020 13:25

How could you demonise someone who does so much good?

No drag queen has ever done anything good for me. Sneering at women? How positive. If you're a misogynist...

SoupDragon · 25/06/2020 13:26

People on here are so clearly homophobic

Are all drag queens gay?

Has anyone here said "gay people can't read stories to children"?

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 25/06/2020 13:26

Mumsnet didn't organise a protest, you nana.

Go away.

BigBadVoodooHat · 25/06/2020 13:28

Mums net all ganged up to report it to leeds city council and got it shut down so yes.

This is utter rubbish Hmm

A thread on this was deleted earlier today. Someone somewhere has an agenda and so they've fabricated a ridiculous story whereby an army of MN-ers ganged up and threatened a drag queen with crucifixion.

Interestingly, not one single MNer spotted this 'campaign' of death threats and intimidation. That's because it did not happen.

roseapothecary · 25/06/2020 13:30

I don't really get it. Maybe start your own mumsnet campaign if having drag queens read your child a story is really important to you.

Drag is not for children.

Inappropriate photos on his public SM should raise flags, where they’re from 2 years ago or not.
No one is casting aspersions on the drag queen, he’s probably excellent at what he does, but that doesn’t make it suitable for children.
