Picture books from your childhood

I'm looking to add to my picture book collection to share with the little (and big too for that matter!) munchkins I look after, but I'm struggling to find ones that I like that everyone hasn't already got! Julia Donaldson is out, 'Classic' classics like The Large family/Peace at Last/Alfie/Meg&Mog/Tiger who came to tea etc are all out, because everyone already has them on their shelf at home! Do you remember any from your childhood that you loved and pestered to have read to you again and again, or a random obscure one that your children love, but that no one else knows about?

The Quangle Wangle’s Hat. It was my favourite book.

Shockers · 14/02/2020 01:00

It was illustrated by Helen Oxenbury. I believe it’s been reprinted with different illustrations, but the original illustrations were wonderful, so I’d try to get that one.

The one I really remember from my early childhood was The Saggy Baggy Elephant.

Shockers · 14/02/2020 01:02

In fact, any book with illustrations by Helen Oxenbury! Mr Gumpy’s Day Out was another favourite.

FurrySlipperBoots · 14/02/2020 01:05

I bought Mr Gumpy's Outing for pure nostalgia, but it was right there with all the other best sellers, and I know it's popular in nurseries too. I want to try and find ones the youth of today don't know!

I used to like Avocado Baby by (I think) John Burningham.

Shockers · 14/02/2020 02:57

In the Night Kitchen by Maurice Sendack was another of my favourites. It’s a bit trippy though!

Shockers · 14/02/2020 03:01

I’ve just googled it to see whether you could still get it, and it appears it was banned! I loved it!

What-a-mess
A couple of stories by spike milligan. One was the enormous jelly, the other about a dog called spot I think. He did the illustrations too.

A book called a treeful of pigs. I must admit sincecreading it to my two, I’m not totally sure about the message, but I still love the pictures.
