I'm looking to add to my picture book collection to share with the little (and big too for that matter!) munchkins I look after, but I'm struggling to find ones that I like that everyone hasn't already got! Julia Donaldson is out, 'Classic' classics like The Large family/Peace at Last/Alfie/Meg&Mog/Tiger who came to tea etc are all out, because everyone already has them on their shelf at home! Do you remember any from your childhood that you loved and pestered to have read to you again and again, or a random obscure one that your children love, but that no one else knows about?

Harry the dirty dog by Gene Zion.

Also I love the Frog and Toad stories by Arnold Lobel, but they are considered classics (though American so maybe less known here). And that's reminded me about the Frog books by Max Velthuijs (I must have something about frogs Grin).

We had those too. I remember the Christmas one where they argued one said to the other "I'm going to wrap you up in tinsel and make you twinkle like a little star." I have used that on my dc when they were arguing putting the decorations up.

Witchend Grin. They have some great lines in them. I love the one where Toad won't get out of the water in case Frog laughs at his bathing costume. Then word gets around and soon a little crowd has gathered just to see him get out!

And One White Crocodile Smile which is just surreal - I still have my copy and all 3 DC have loved it.

It was illustrated by Helen Oxenbury

Did she illustrate a series of charming books about bears?
