My almost 10 year old son loves reading! He's worked his way through all of Roahl Dahl, David Walliams, David Baddiel, and Jeff Kinney. He's also read all of the beast quest, how to train your dragon and horrid henry books. Some of these he's read more than twice. Any age appropriate suggestions for what to get him next would be appreciated (stand alone or a series). I've got the Harry Potter boxset bought in ready for Christmas although he definitely prefers more comedy style books - David Walliams and Jeff Kinney in particular. I love that he enjoys this so much and want to make sure he doesn't run out of books 😊

Let him loose in library or bookshop to find something he likes.

Horovitz's Alex Rider series, and the Ravens Gate sequence (Power of 5?) Both series kept my boy happy.

Phillip Reeves' Mortal Engines quartet is excellent. The prequel trilogy is not as good, but still good.

The various Percy Jackson series by Rick Riorden?

But unless it's a surprise gift then a trip to the library or bookshop is s good idea.

My son loved the 'Fintan Fedora' the explorer books. He read them over and over! I think there are three of them.

Great ideas - thanks everyone

Middle School series, and Tom Gates series, are similar to Wimpy Kid.

LoveGrowsWhere · 08/09/2019 22:51

Zoobreak by Gordon Korman
Diary of a cricket god
Jennings

BlueChampagne · 09/09/2019 12:44

Edge Chronicles?

mummaminnie · 09/09/2019 12:47

The first Skullduggery Pleasant books might be suitable. I'm think my DD was in Year 5 when she started reading them and they're suitable for both boys and girls. It was a friend who recommended them as her DS had loved them.

dirtyfabulous · 09/09/2019 12:53

Second Rick Riordan & Anthony Horowitz.
Looking at the underland chronicles for my ds(10) for Christmas

BlueChampagne · 09/09/2019 12:55

Just remembered, DS1 loved A Series of Unfortunate Events at this age.

Filmbuffmum · 09/09/2019 13:05

Try The Mysterious Benedict Society - really fun series about puzzle solving kids which both my boys have loved.

RainOrSun · 09/09/2019 13:09

Loads of great ideas already, and some for me to in estimate.
One I've not seen mentioned is 13 Story treehouse.
Also, not particularly comedic, but the Wings of Fire series by Tui Sutherland) is being devoured by my 10 and 8 yr olds.

milliefiori · 09/09/2019 13:13

The Eddy Stone series is very funny if he likes Jeff Kinney and David Walliams. I also second Alex Rider - DC loved them too. And Cherub series Hive series etc if he likes adventure.

BlueChampagne · 09/09/2019 13:27

Eddie Dickens series by Philip Ardagh is quite comic.

LuckyAugust · 09/09/2019 20:55

Brilliant- thanks so much everyone 😊

My DS is enjoying Chronicles of Ancient Darkness Series by Michelle Paver, first book in the series is Wolf Brother.

RomaineCalm · 09/09/2019 21:46

Stuart Gibbs is also worth looking at - DC loved the 'Spy school' at that age. The other two series were also enjoyed.

sawyersfishbiscuits · 09/09/2019 22:09

Have you seen the Fighting Fantasy books? A bit like a version of the old 'choose your own adventure' books but you use dice too. My DS has just discovered them and although he reads the same sort of boy humorous books as your DS he has really enjoyed the first one. They're really good.

Crackery · 09/09/2019 22:17

The boy at the back of the class

about a Syrian refugee... very accessible for that age imo but a wee bit mroe meaty

KingCatMeowInSpace · 09/09/2019 22:24

The Bolds series

BlueChampagne · 10/09/2019 12:48

Ruby Redfort?

noblegiraffe · 10/09/2019 12:53

DS loves David Solomon’s series ‘My brother is a superhero (I could have been one too except I needed a wee)’ and he seems to have similar taste to yours.

ScatteredMama82 · 10/09/2019 12:54

My DS1 is nearly 10, and like the same authors as yours. Here are some he's read recently and loved:

What not to do if you turn invisible
The 100 year old boy
Time travelling with a hamster
The day I was erased
The dodo made me do it (he was laughing out loud at this one)
I swapped my brother on the internet
The light jar

ScatteredMama82 · 10/09/2019 12:57

@Crackery the boy at the back of the class looks great - I'm adding that to the Christmas list for my DS, thanks
