Audiobooks for family car journeys – share your favourites

With summer in full swing, we’ve rounded up a list of most recommended audiobooks for surviving long car journeys with kids.

We’d like to keep this page updated so if we’ve missed your favourite audiobook, share it on this thread with reasons why you and your family liked it.

We have a Julia Donaldson collection which DS loves. He's only 1 but I can see these growing with him for a number of years. He loves 'Room on the broom', 'A squash and a squeeze' and 'The smartest giant in town' in particular.

Jeremy James series by David Henry Wilson are very funny!

Alan Bennetts Winnie the Pooh.

All of the David Walliams books, read by him and Matt Lucas. Hilarious!

I've just got 'The Amazing Maurice and his educated Rodents' by Terry Pratchett. Can't wait for our road trip on Friday to introduce dd to TP!

We've only tried Roald Dahl and Horrid Henry and they've both gone down well.

My DC's are 14, 12 & 8 and still enjoy listening to audiobooks (although finding books to suit everyone is getting harder!)

We are part way through Spy Dog and everyone seems to be enjoying it from 6years to 15years!

Harry Potter saw us through many a trip to Europe.

I second the Julia Donaldson collection: DH has put it all on one CD with loads of her songs plus Dogger and some Michael Rosen poems: it's perfect for the car and DS (nearly 4) has loved it for years.

Any recommendations for ten and 16 yr old ?

DS loves the Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson - The Wind Singer, Slaves of the Mastery and Firesong. It's a fantasy series, and it's really quite good.

Molly333 No idea whether your DC would enjoy the genre, but I think it's suitable for both ages. DS is 10, and I'm old and we both like the books.

The free Audio books from Audible, can you keep the downloads after the trial has finished if you don't continue with the membership?

Has to be the bromeliad trilogy by Terry Pratchett. Truckers, Diggers and Wings. But only if read by Tony Robinson. He's the voice of my childhood.

Winnie the Pooh, Dramatised version with Judy Dench, Michael Williams, Sandi Toksvig, Geoffrey Palmer, Jane Horrocks and Stephen Fry.

Just ordered the Narnia series for this year's hols.

The Mr Gum books, particularly 'You're a bad man Mr Gum'. Meant for kids, but had DH and me in stitches too.

For older kids - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy perhaps? Especially if they're in to science.
