My daughter loves reading adventure stories. She has enjoyed all the How to train your dragon series, A series of unfortunate events, Alex Ryder, Ottoline, and some beast quest. Can anyone recommend some other adventure stories with a female protagonist? Thanks!

Carbonel - a condescending talking cat has adventures with a girl called Rosemary who definitely is the protagonist with a sidekick called John.
The Wizard of Oz? The second one (Return to Oz) is a pile of sexist tripe but the other 12 aren't too bad.

Anne of Green Gables? Might at least make a good book to read to her.

Witchworld books by Emma Fischel and Turlingham Academy books by Ellie Boswell are being enjoyed by our 8yo.

Pippi Longstocking

The Lucy Evans InstaExplorer series, a very strong girl heroine, full of adventure

There are go-getting female protagonists Walk-it Willow and Change-it Cho in the Clever Tykes books.

Joan Aiken's books? Wolves of Willoughby Chase, Black Hearts in Battersea etc. (These may be for a couple of years' time actually but worth bearing in mind)

The Nina series (there are 3 of them) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008YUNK9G/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

The Mabel Jones books are absolutely hilarious if she fancies something funny - about a girl kidnapped by pirates to another world . We read these at bedtime and DH and I really look forward to reading them as they are so funny!

DD1 loved Roman Mysteries and the Joan Aiken ones at that age.
Dd2 was more into classics: What Katie Did, Little Women, Secret Garden etc. Loads out there.

The lost wild trilogy ( dark wild, last wild, wild beyond)
This incorrigible children of Ashton place (5 book series with 6th and last one yet to come)
My 8 yr old loved these

I second the Tiffiny Aching books by Terry Pratchett - Wee Free genetic. His books have very strong female characters.

JaWellNoFine · 01/08/2016 09:03

Wee Free Men...

(How does the word 'men' become 'genetic' in auto correct world? Hmm)

The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley are a must read!

The Changeover, Margaret Mahy (kind of about puberty so maybe for a bit later)

Auntpodder · 03/08/2016 17:44

The Joan Aiken books with Dido Twite? Black Hearts in Battersea... (Wolves of Willoughby Chase starts the series but DT doesn't appear in it). I loved them at 8 years...

jenny77 · 05/09/2016 17:02

Great, thanks. There are loads there I think she would like. I remembered how much I loved Nancy Drew when I was her age. Time for a visit to the loft...
