Must read toddler books

Hi there, this has probably been done before but I want to build a nice collection of books for my toddler. What would you recommend?

Oooh, anything by Richard Scarry, or Shirley Hughes. I adored Richard Scarry myself. And the early Dr Seuss. Not now Bernard, brilliant, ditto the Little red train books. Faster, faster, little red train...

Apart from the obvious ones and books that have already been suggested DS loves Oi Frog and knows it cover to cover. It's mine and DP's personal favourite too!

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions. We have some of them already (I have a 7yo as well as the toddler) but apparently we barely scratched the surface the first time round! I have a feeling the older one might still quite enjoy the baby's story-time books even now. I'm reading Heidi to her at the moment which she seems to be enjoying. She's a real outdoors girl.

I have a dog and vehicle obsessed 2 year old DS so, as well as the classics mentioned above, his favourite books are Dogs by Emily Gravett and The Big Yellow Digger.

We get books in the 10 for £10 at the works and have found some great not so well known ones in there as well as some classics

I second Oi Frog it is glorious. If you have robust children I want my hat back but delicate souls may not love it as much as my little monster does. Again by Emily Gravett. Penguin by Polly Dunbar. I love you little Monster by Giles Andrae (This really made me cry) the Jolly Postman. The lovely personalised book The little boy/girl who lost his/her name.

Owl babies is the current favourite and can be recited by all members of the family.

The one that gets me every time is Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson.

Anything by Sandra Boynton, especially Moo Baa La la la. We have the songs as well. I found Red Hat Blue Hat in a charity shop and now we have loads of them.

My DS (19 months) loves Peepo (as do I) and I absolutely adore Tabby McTat (Julia Donaldson) it is fantastic.

I'm also reading him 'There's a house inside my mummy' to prepare him for DC2 but I cry every time I get to page 2, so it's not fulfilling its role just yet!
