Books for a 12 yr old boy

AuntieMaryHadACanary · 20/04/2016 20:20

Hi
Can anyone suggest any books for a 12 year old boy? He has enjoyed the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore, The Bear Grylls mission survive series, the Tom Gates books, the How to Train Your Dragon series. He is a good reader, has always loved books but has hit a bit of a wall recently.
Any other ideas gratefully received! Thanks

Marking place so I can pinch some idea. Since DS has started high school and no longer has to fill in his 'reading diary' anymore, he hardly reads anything.

The last set he read was the Charlie Higson Zombie series. I'm struggling to get him interested in anything else.

DD liked the Insignia trilogy (SJ Kincaid)

marceline · 20/04/2016 20:36

My 12 yo has just started getting the R L Stine 'Goosebumps' series and seems quite gripped.

AuntieMaryHadACanary · 20/04/2016 20:36

It is a bit of a tricky age isn't it, freshprincess?
Thanks for the suggestion sadik I'll take a look.

I have just upgraded ds1's library card and let him loose in the teenage section (12-16's). Loads of books I hadn't heard of.

The Stoneheart trilogy by Charlie Fletcher, especially if you live in London or he is familiar with it. It's based in London in the present day so everything is recognisable but it's a fantasy too and it makes you look at all the monuments and statues you see completely differently.

BlueChampagne · 22/04/2016 13:13

Complete Sherlock Holmes?
Alan Garner?
Kevin Crossley-Holland's Arthur trilogy?

Second Ursula Le Guin

bumblingbovine49 · 22/04/2016 13:57

Ds like the maze runner set of books by James Dashner. Also he has been reading "The Gone Series by Michael Grant He seems to like them a lot

Oh, glad someone mentioned The Hunger Games and Alan Garner. There's also The Dark is Rising series (Susan Cooper IIRC) DS used to read them around Christmas time.
And don't forget The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings if he's not already read them.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 22/04/2016 14:48

The Roman Mysteries
Cirque du freak by Darren Shan
Ds1 is 13 but started reading Discworld at 12. He absolutely loves them.
Swallows and Amazons; the full series

BlueChampagne · 22/04/2016 22:07

Second The Dark is Rising and Tolkein
Swallows and Amazons great for the right child (I loved them as a kid)
Leon Garfield?
Jack London?
Even Robert Graves's "I, Claudius" perhaps

MeDented · 22/04/2016 22:35

The Spooks series too

Nicknamegrief · 22/04/2016 22:48

The Redwall books by Brian Jacques.

Lord of the Rings/Hobbit.

Miss Pettergrew's something something peculiar children.

The Marvels- by the guy who wrote Hugo, I think.

AntiquityUbiquity · 23/04/2016 08:01

Heartland Trilogy by Chuck Wendig

It's all zombies & dystopia here!

iseenodust · 24/04/2016 16:45

Dark Lord (actually humorous)
Skullduggery Pleasant
Phantom Tollbooth
The Roman Mysteries by C Lawrence
Percy Jackson

deepdarkwood · 25/04/2016 17:57

Soupswoop · 25/04/2016 18:34

Did he go on to read the Henderson's Boys (Spin-off series) after Cherub?

Also suggest Trouble Twisters series by Garth Nix and Unicorne Files series by Chris D'Lacey.
