Books for a 12 yr old boy

Hi
Can anyone suggest any books for a 12 year old boy? He has enjoyed the Cherub series by Robert Muchamore, The Bear Grylls mission survive series, the Tom Gates books, the How to Train Your Dragon series. He is a good reader, has always loved books but has hit a bit of a wall recently.
Any other ideas gratefully received! Thanks

Be careful with Hunger games and Gone series if he's been reading tom gates etc so far. The Gone series in particular is very graphic. Maze runner also has graphic violence (particularly the later books).

He might be fine with them but its a very big step up from how to train your dragon.

Love this thread. So useful. Thanks :)

My ds loves the Montmorency books by Eleanor Updale. There are 5 of them and he has reread them several times. They were on the school recommended reads list for Y7/8 and I had never heard of them before!

Has anyone mentioned Young Bond and Alex Rider?

ladydepp · 26/04/2016 21:02

And the Diamond Brothers by Antony Horowitz - v funny evidently!

BlueChampagne · 27/04/2016 13:40

Sherlock Holmes!

Firstlawofholes · 28/04/2016 20:01

Phillip Pullman trilogy
Hobbit / Lord of the Rings
Narnia series (maybe getting a bit old for these but if he hasn't read them yet...)
Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Swallows and Amazons
Harry Potter

We're a bit stuck too as DS has read all of these (a while ago already). He's 11 and emotionally not quite ready for the Hunger Games or Divergent yet, but has way outgrown Percy Jackson etc. At the moment he's quite enjoying Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events, just because he hadn't read those before, but I'm at a loss as to what to suggest next. Anything to keep him off Minecraft (thought he'd be over that one by now but no!)

I agree with redhat btw that some of the suggestions are a huge step up from How to Train your Dragon! My 8-year old has read all of those, but my 11-YO would not be ready for Maze Runner, Gone or Hunger Games. Luckily he knows his own limits. LOTR was fine though (read at 10).

My son liked Dragons & Bear Grylls, he has also liked:
Stig of the Dump
Swiss Family Robinson
John Grisham's Theodore Boone Series
Percy Jackson series
Hunger Games
Power of Five series
Alex Rider

He enjoyed Holes but said Small Steps (Louis Sachar) was better.

He started Maze Games was boring. He didn't get on with Hitchiker's Guide. I was considering looking at the Chris Ryan junior edition which looked a bit of an easy read on a boyish subject (SAS)

BlueChampagne · 09/05/2016 13:04

Scarlet Pimpernel
Prisoner of Zenda
Three Muskateers
Mortal Engines if not already mentioned

Rollicking adventure all round!

Fab ideas thank

Has he read Horowitz's Alex Ryder series? And his weirder Power of Five series. Very Cherub-like.
And Charlie Higson's Young Bond?
Eoin Colfer is also fantastic for this age group - my DC loved Airman.
Agree with recommendations for Louis Sachar books. Holes is brilliant, Small Steps is good and so is There's a Boy In The Girls' Bathroom.
Has he read the Hive series by Mark Walden? If he likes Cherub etc he'll like those too.
A great standalone book is Flip by Martyn Bedford. Mind blowing concept.

WhatAPigsEar · 08/07/2016 10:54

Ds has loved:
Maze Runner series
Divergent trilogy
Lorien Legacies
Cherub series
Gone Series
Holes but not the other Louis Sachar books
Henderson Boys series
Harry Potter (re read them over!)
Hunger Games series

Thanks for starting this thread, I'm always looking out for recommendations for him Smile

DS(12) is currently reading and enjoying A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness.

He's got the following for his summer reads:
Maggot Moon (already owned)
Holes - inspired by this thread
Insignia - inspired by this thread
Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness (already owned)

Coming back to this thread for inspiration once he gets through that lot!

Papergirl1968 · 08/07/2016 20:58

Recommend Jeffrey Archer's Paths of Glory which is about an attempt to climb Everest. No sex, swearing or politics from what I can recall - an adventure based on a true story.

mellicauli · 27/07/2016 00:11

Good suggestions here..many DS will love, many he has alreadÅ· lived.

Has anyone read the Chris Ryan junior edition of The One That Got Away? Is it suitable for a 12 year old (who was ok with Hunger Games, Power of Five etc)
