feminist princess books

my 5 year old daughter loves princesses and fairys.
Are there any books that are really good, i know there is one princess one (where she gets sent to finishing school, maybe called princess school, and ruins it) but can't remember the name, are there any others?

I can't just buy her other books as she wants books about long haired princess in floor length dresses. And i want her to understand she can be that AND still be an explorer, scientist well anything.

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch! It's about a princess who saves the prince from a dragon who burns down their castle and when he tells her she doesn't look like a princess anymore, she tells him where to shove his misogynistic shite. Was an absolute fave of mine as a child.

The Princess and the Pony is pretty good.

Check out A Mighty Girl on fb or on their website. They are a fab site (though a bit US focussed) and have a whole section on feminist princess stories. There's loads of great feminist toys there too.

Princess smarty pants by babette cole is very funny.

I think Merida from brave is pretty badass

or Mulan? She disguises herself as a man because they won't let her be a girl and saves the day

The Princess and the Giant? She climbs the beanstalk and tells the giant how to behave.

Not quite a princess(!), but the night pirates?

Zog by Julia Donaldson, has a brave princess in it I think?

I'm a big fan of Zog, nor direct about princesses per se nut when the Prince comes to rescue her from the dragon she tells him to fuck off she is becoming a doctor...

And the Kitty Lacey books - they might not be quite what you're looking for, as they have a lot of stereotypes in them, but it is always the girls that save the day!

Brave is excellent, we will have to watch that more, i love the princess and the frog as well.

Zog is a great favourite in our house, as is The Paperbag Princess (best when listened to - Robert Munsch has recorded all his stories and they are available online - they all cause complete hysterics with my DC)

The Princess and the Wizard is pretty good too - it's also by Julia Donaldson and it's along the lines of Princess gets captured by nasty wizard, but then goes and rescues herself. :)

DTs love bloody sparkly Disney princess books. I just make sure I get them a balance of all sorts of books as well and make sure I tell them as much as possible they can do WHATEVER they want.

Current favourite fame is playing space missions and being Tim Peake, dressed as the lithe mermaid.

I like Mulan.
