my 5 year old daughter loves princesses and fairys.
Are there any books that are really good, i know there is one princess one (where she gets sent to finishing school, maybe called princess school, and ruins it) but can't remember the name, are there any others?

I can't just buy her other books as she wants books about long haired princess in floor length dresses. And i want her to understand she can be that AND still be an explorer, scientist well anything.

Oops- just realised now I'm home, and seen the book- it's Zita the space girl, not space princess! Sorry- it's still great though.

So today bought zog and ordered princess smartypants (the book i was looking for with the finishing school) and the paperbag princess, and two winnie witch (big favourites) that looks like a suitable present bundle.

The Worst Princess - Anna Kemp of Dogs Don't Do Ballet fame.

Princess sue rebels against her prince and teams up with a dragon and they terrorise the prince and go off and have fun. Perfect for a 5 year old, great pics, very funny a face with my DD as also in rhyme.

I second The Worst Princess. My girls love Princess Sue.

It's probably a bit old for them yet but have a look that the Princess Academy books too.

Princess Smartypants Breaks The Rules

Also, just try to introduce a range of other books too. DD (5) has the princess bug now, to my feminist disgust but she has 3 bed time stories every night. One can be a princess one but then one can be about space, or exploring, or pirates.

The Worst Princess is perfect for a 5 year old. She's wooed by a prince, then horrified when he wants to shut her up in a tower looking decorative and, worse, kill dragons. She teams up with the dragon and they beat him together. There's a nice couplet, 'Also, Susan, beg your pardon, why's there a dragon in my garden?'

Princess smarty pants is fun, and princess smarty pants breaks the rules.

My personal hatred is reserved for the princess and the pea.

The Tough Princess by Martine Waddell is great, and we love the illustrations - she bashes the bad fairy, slays the dragon and deals with a hapless prince. Another one is Arthur's Tractor by Pippa Goodhart - a very capable princess in that.

Paperbag Princess from me too.

Also, 'Marmaduke the Very Different Dragon', has a very cool and 'different' princess as his side kick.
