I need a list of very popular/famous children's books that have equally well-known (and distinctive) pictures, for a project I'm working on, and I'm stuck!
So far I have:
Winnie the Pooh
The Tiger Who Came To Tea
Room on the Broom
Elmer the Elephant

There must be more, can anyone think of any? Much appreciated Grin

Definitely Quentin Blake.

Oliver Jeffers' style is quite distinctive, but I'm not sure how well known as pictures.

Ballet Shoes with Ruth Gervis' s illustrations (she was Noel Streatfeild' s sister)
For me, E. Nesbit's books are just not right without the original illustrations, but they might not be well known enough for your purposes.

Paddington's original illustrations are very evocative and quite intriguing until you read the story.
I love the coloured pencil drawings by Raymond Briggs (The Snowman etc).
