Mine is 'The Island of the Skog' by Steven Kellogg. The DC love it too :)

LadyPlumpington sweet valley and babysitters club were truly ace! Did manage to mix it up with 'twins at St. Claires " and "Mallory Towers"! I loved a good boarding school yarn! Ripping jam sandwiches, super midnight feasts and jolly hockey sticks! They made me want to call my future child Prudence or Roberta! I might

I see your Mary Plain, Fattipuffs and Thinifers and Professor Branestawm and raise to Mrs Pepporpot.

Anyone remember her? An old lady who would suddenly and without warning shrink to be the size of a pepper pot. With hilarious results.

5Foot5 · 15/07/2015 22:35

Pepperpot

PurpleDaisies · 15/07/2015 22:36

I was horse mad...anyone remember stories about a horse called Flicka?

LadyPlumpington · 15/07/2015 22:36

I remember Pongwiffy..... and our teacher read 'Marianne Dreams' to us aged 8 and did a special droning voice for the evil stones. That didn't freak us out at all Confused

They don't make 'em like they used to. This may not always be a bad thing.

Apples Every Day by Grace Richardson. I used to get it out of the library as often as I could in the Sixties!

PageNotFound404 · 15/07/2015 22:37

Yes PurpleDaisies - My Friend Flicka, Thunderhead and Green Grass of Wyoming.

mrsfox · 15/07/2015 22:37

Does anyone know Amos and Boris about a mouse and a whale? It was famous in our household for always making my sister weep at the end when they say farewell (spoiler! ) but I have never come across it anywhere else.

And the Hilda series of books by Phyllis Garrard about a sassy New Zealand school girl set in the 30s - very funny and much loved.

So many other good ones here - I'd forgotten The Tree That Sat Down and Fireweed. It's great that lots of children's classics are free on Kindle including things like Clover from the What Katy Did series.

Indole · 15/07/2015 22:37

Oh yes, I loved Mrs Frisby and the Rats of Nimh. Brilliant book.

TheSquatLobster · 15/07/2015 22:39

Was it Sam's Sandwich Jo ?
Where his sister was making a sandwich but each time she added something, he put in something horrible?

PageNotFound404 · 15/07/2015 22:40

I remember Mrs Pepperpot!

I was another one who was pony mad. Anyone remember Misty From Chincoteague?

Clayhanger · 15/07/2015 22:41

Yes I remember Mrs Pepperpot. She was ace

LadyPlumpington · 15/07/2015 22:41

So happy to hear so many others loved Rebecca's World.

I also liked the tales of Arabel and Mortimer (little girl and troublesome raven).

Across the Barricades was brilliant. Poor old Mrs McConkey blown up in her sweet shop Sad

TinklyLittleLaugh · 15/07/2015 22:42

Oh I used to love a good horse book; the Silver Brumbies were my favourites. A horse hero who was vain, aggressive and constantly on the chase for another beautiful female to add to his collection. Lots of life lessons there Hmm

LadyPlumpington · 15/07/2015 22:43

Oh, and Homeward Bounders (I think). Another one that was scary, a la Rebecca's World.

I adored Joan Lingard's Kevin and Sadie books. So formative. So very real. And sweet too.

PageNotFound404 · 15/07/2015 22:44

I used to act out the Silver Brumby in my gran's garden. And whenever I went on holiday, an invisible Thowra and an invisible Shantih (from the Jinny at Finmory books) used to come with me.

CheeseEMouse · 15/07/2015 22:45

I loved loved Emily of New Moon - LadyPlumpington. I too preferred them to the Anne of Green Gables series (though I had loads of them).

My obscure favourite is "the practical princess and other liberating fairy tales". I liked the fact the princess rescued herself.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 15/07/2015 22:45

The munch bunch
The garden gang.
Probably still very heard of but Little miss and Mr Men. Mr Tickle was my all time favourite Grin

Indole · 15/07/2015 22:46

I loved Nicholas Fisk. All his stuff was wonderful (and lots quite scary). Grinny is one I especially remember.

I remember the Silver Brumby series!

Did anyone read The Animals of Farthing Wood? I quite enjoyed those.

YY to The High House by Honor Arundel!! I can picture the cover. Grin

LauraChant · 15/07/2015 22:47

One that I am sad is out of print is Keeper of the Isis Light by Monica Hughes, as I had thought to get it for my nephew. I also recently bought a second hand copy of the Edge of The World by JohnGordon about children who could move between the Fens and a strange land which had really stayed in my memory over the years.
