Mine is 'The Island of the Skog' by Steven Kellogg. The DC love it too :)

What are your old obscure favourites?

The Noggin the Nog books, though perhaps so obscure?

calilark · 15/07/2015 20:09

The Giant Jam Sandwich. Hardly anyone has ever heard of it!

PurpleDaisies · 15/07/2015 20:11

The Tales of Olga da Polga. Written by Michael Bond but no one seems to have heard of it when I rave about how good a book it is! The hero is a guinea pig.

LegArmpits · 15/07/2015 20:12

Otto is a Rhino.
They made a terrible film of it a few years ago.

SaguaroBlossom · 15/07/2015 20:14

Froggy's Little Brother by Brenda. Have very vivid memories of this as a child, it's a serious tear-jerker. I'm very tempted to buy it from Amazon, but keep thinking I'll find my original copy one day in my mother's attic.

RunAwayHome · 15/07/2015 20:15

I've heard of Olga da Polga!

I used to love Thursday's Children, by Rumer Godden. Not that obscure, but not too many people seem to know it.

LauraChant · 15/07/2015 20:17

I've read the Giant Jam Sandwich! I had one Noggin book which I loved, just the style of the language and the pictures. It was about mermaids and a fake volcano.

Mine would be King of the Copper Mountain and Camerons at the Castle, although I don't really know if they are obscure or not. I also liked a non fiction Q&A book which had a family of red headed children illustrating all the answers must have been Amercian because they were questions like "Why do we have Thanksgiving?"

Wobblystraddle · 15/07/2015 20:17

Th worst fifth on record. Loved it and read it over and over.

GiddyOnZackHunt · 15/07/2015 20:17

The Overland Launch. It's based upon the night that a Devon lifeboat crew dragged their big wooden boat across Dartmoor to launch it during a huge storm.
I still reread it every five years or so.

SuffolkNWhat · 15/07/2015 20:17

The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. Loved that book.

Asleeponasunbeam · 15/07/2015 20:19

I love the Giant Jam Sandwich and so do my DC. Some of Julia Donaldson's books, like 'What the Ladybird Heard', 'Tyrannosaurus Drip' and 'Jack and the Flum Flum Tree' have a very similar rhythm and style.

GiantGaspingSatanicCyst · 15/07/2015 20:20

Bogwoppit.

Sponge, X and Y. I paid £45 for a copy earlier this year - worth every penny :)

BikeRunSki · 15/07/2015 20:20

I remember the Olga da Polga books! purple

My obscure book is "William the Dragon". It was written by a child/teen and I don't think it was published for very long. The DC recently found the old, battered, drawn in copy at my mum's house. I looked online for one in better condition for them, and they seem to sell for about a million pounds (I exaggerate!)! Damn you dsis and your "artistic" ways....

SometimesItRains · 15/07/2015 20:20

DH and his brothers had the jam sandwich book as kids. I saw it for the first time when I read it to our DC a few months ago - loved it and so did they. I used to love Miss Flora McFlimsey & Little Laughing Water. My dad hates it as he had to read it every night to me for years.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 15/07/2015 20:21

Probably not obscure here but obscure in Canada where I grew up - Jill's Gymkhana and related books. Loved them. Adored them. Bought them for the DDs to read. They ignored them. Sad

AngelsWithSilverWings · 15/07/2015 20:22

My favourite was called Five Dol?s in a House or something like that. I read it over and over again.

It was about a Dolls House where five dolls lived and there was a naughty monkey who lived on the roof.

I know I still have the book somewhere but can't find it anywhere. My daughter would love it.

AmeliaPeabody · 15/07/2015 20:22

The Story about Ping

Clive Barker signed my copy of Thief of Always. What a long time ago that was!

LadyPlumpington · 15/07/2015 20:23

I love The Thief of Always! And Dogsbody.

I saw Olga da Polga in Waterstones yesterday Grin

Was just gonna say the Jill's pony books.

SaucyJack · 15/07/2015 20:25

And a book about a cat with one eye called Pyewacket.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/07/2015 20:26

The Land of Green Ginger, by Noel Langley.

LadyPlumpington · 15/07/2015 20:26

What about Moomintroll? He seems neglected these days. And Tintin. And Asterix.

We have a copy of The Giant Jam Sandwich, it's a great book.

Mine is a book published by a zoo, I think, back in the 80s, called Marcus Who Am I. It's about a tapir who wanders around the zoo trying to work out what kind of animal he is.

I've been after it for ages and just found a copy on eBay for £15. Which is a bit ridiculous for a kids book, and I'm not sure I'd even let DD read it Grin but I am soooo torn...

dementedma · 15/07/2015 20:27

Bet no-one has heard of mine. Pondus the Penguin.

happybubblebrain · 15/07/2015 20:27

I had a book when I was really young about two sisters (or friends) called Erica and Inge. One of them had a doll called fat belly cross-eye. Does anyone know what the book title was? I'd really like to read it again. I loved that book.
