Spring is in the air – our noses are a-twitch, our tails a-quiver – and to celebrate, the Peter Rabbit Club are giving one lucky Mumsnetter a fabulous Peter Rabbit book bundle! What’s more, ten runners-up will receive a copy of Peter Rabbit’s Hop To It! sticker book, packed with stickers and fun activities to keep little bunnies busy this Easter.

For a chance to win these goodies, tell us how you enjoyed the spring air when you were but a wee bunny yourself. We particularly want to hear about the classic outdoor games you used to play. Hopscotch anyone?

To enter the competition, just post your top outdoor games on this thread and we’ll pick our favourites. This competition is sponsored by the Peter Rabbit Club.

This competition is now closed
Winner: jeee
Runners-up: KittyFan83, DancingHat, Wotshudwehave4T, itsnotjustaslap, CopperPan, Clawdy, Dollyemi, riverwell, Bostin, buckley1983

Thanks for all your wonderful stories

Congratulations to the winners! We'll be in touch shortly.

Wish I could remember what was involved with those elastic games. You sort of did something with your ankles and someone hopped between the elastics Great fun!

UpOnDown · 29/03/2015 15:12

Hide and seek in the woods behind the football pitch.

Loreleigh · 30/03/2015 20:03

Our favourite outdoor games were building various camps (in the garden, up the alley or in the woods) and tree climbing (great to sit up the trees 'people watching') At school it was chase, stilt-walking, football and British Bulldog.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 30/03/2015 20:14

We loved playing elastics, what's the time mr wolf, skipping, rin-tin-tin and stuck in the mud.

ShirleyTemple77 · 30/03/2015 20:46

I used to love playing two balls against a wall . Under arm,up in the air, under your leg whilst singing a song then your friend would come in and take over whilst you were still throwing balls . That's if you were good .Smile

-Gran showed us how to hard boil eggs wrapped in onion skins, old rags and leaves which made pretty patterns on the shells, then on Easter Sunday we'd have a race, rolling them down a nearby hill. Then we ate them.
-tyre swing- a few of us played together, everyone wanted to be on the tyre swing, tied to a tree on a steep bank, covered in long grass. A game developed where those waiting for a turn threw big black slugs from the grass at the person on the swing until they got off! (We were only young and didn't think of the poor slugs)
-dens in the hayshed (when dad was busy elsewhere). A wall of bales was built in each side of the shed, then we'd stake turns storming the other's fort, knocking the bales down.

Block 1 2 3 which I think is now called 40 40. We'd play in the back lane. The lamp post was always 'Home' and you had to get back to it from hiding places. We were like monkeys. We used to hide in old air raid shelters and run along the top of the neighbour's back walls (quite high). No one ever told us off for it. We'd play for hours.

At Easter we used to put wax on eggs and then boil them in coloured water to make marbled eggs, then roll them down the hill until they broke. (Why?)

Itchylegs · 01/04/2015 21:48

Off Ground Touch was a favourite. also Leapfrog, American Skipping, den building down the alleyways.

Itchylegs · 01/04/2015 22:26

H yes, my absolute favourite was a tennis ball in a cut off leg of nylon tights. This would be bounced against the wall, between legs, over shoulder, all the while singing rhymes. I loved that!

CheeseEMouse · 02/04/2015 12:17

We used to play "what's the time Mr Wolf?" and then my sister and I used to have fairly involved games of tennis or swingball in the garden. Another favourite was spinning around until you got extremely dizzy and then stopping. My mum put a stop to that when I fell into one of the lilies planted in the garden...!

itsnotjustaslap · 02/04/2015 19:52

On our 70's leafy estate our close had a large circular grassed green with a tall pine tree at the centre and there were many children living in the area so the green and the street was always full of children playing.

We used to all play 99 in; where one person was a 'catcher' who would guard the tree and would close their eyes and count to twenty while the rest of the children would run and hide. The aim of the game was to creep up to the tree without being caught by the catcher and tag the tree yelling "99 in". If you were caught and tagged by the catcher you would join the catcher's team.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 04/04/2015 00:40

We always played Kubb. Every family would be out on the green playing it.

I didn't realise that nobody knew what Kubb was until recently!

So yes- go google it. It's better than rounders!

shawbarbara · 04/04/2015 22:12

I grew up on a farm - some of my best memories are in the meadow when the hay was being cut - I loved to hide in the bales of hay and/or climb them. I loved the sun shinning - no worries and huge fields to run about in.

GatoradeMeBitch · 04/04/2015 22:13

My Mum would take me to the local park, which is a mix of good and bad memories. Good - the swings, feeding the ducks, having icecream (the ones where they would put a block of wrapped icecream in the cone and then you'd have to unwrap it yourself and put it back in the cone, a bit messy.) Bad - falling out of a tree and breaking my arm, and getting chased by angry geese. I'm still nervous of them to this day!

angiem32 · 04/04/2015 22:26

Hopscotch, Hide & Seek, Stuck in the Mud.. anything and everything!
Kirby if we had a ball!

Annbunce · 04/04/2015 22:49

I used to love playing marbles (was pretty good at it too - if I should say so myself) x

ThemisA · 05/04/2015 08:20

Hide and Seek, tag and making tents out of sheets and using old trees and the washing line - gardens were much bigger then!

jenniwren12 · 05/04/2015 09:17

we played, what time is it Mr Wolf, British Bulldog and french skipping, where we used to nab all of mums tights and tie them together to make a massive loop

muppet150 · 05/04/2015 09:20

I used to play whats the time mr wolf? French elastics, skipping ropes, oranges and lemons, ring a ring o roses and i used to go rollerskating every Friday too playing games there.

janeyf1 · 05/04/2015 09:24

We used to play 'hide and seek' in the park - was great fun but think mum used to get a bit worried when we hid too well!

lucyrobinson · 05/04/2015 09:25

lizd31 · 05/04/2015 10:11

cnut · 05/04/2015 10:30

Leapfrog was a fave, few bruises here and there though, and hide and seek of course, making dens was my fave lol !

Babanew · 05/04/2015 11:02

We used to play a game where you hide and then have to get back to basebefore the person who is it spots you, we called it spot light or dobbie tee tee.

rachheap2014 · 05/04/2015 12:27

I use to love playing outside, I was an only child so had to occupy myself all the time, often made dens outside and inside and loved to play on my bike
