The Cherub series. It was a huge hit anong my (then) 11 year old and pals

Booksteensmagazines · 19/01/2015 08:51

Other dystopian books are (and these are by UK authors so that might be nice):

Mortal Engines by Philip Reeve (a series - very good)
Echo Boy by Matt Haig (stand alone)
Split Second by Sophie Mckenzie (series)

Good books, but not dystopian:

The Scorpio Games by Maggie Steifvater
Ink heart by Cornelia Funke

An excellent series is Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman. It's a series that requires a little bit of maturity but if she has read Hunger Games then it should be fine.

My 10yo DD is currently engrossed in the first of His Dark Materials trilogy she got for Christmas (Northern Lights).

Thank you, will have a look at all those, I wish she would have a kindle ( she likes to hold a book ) as she gets through so many books, luckily she will re read some, she has read the hunger games books several times. I have ordered her the Olympus books ( new percy Jackson books ) and will get her a few others.

Reckless by Cornelia Funke and the books that follow (series of 3 I think)

Greyhound of a Girl by Roddy Doyle

Splendors and Glooms by Laura Amy Schliz

anything by Sally Gardner - especially the new one, The Door to Where.

schmalex · 26/01/2015 19:07

Phoenix by SF Said or The Wind Singer by William Nicholson.

dd 11y, mad about the ones mentioned in the title. Now also reading Time Riders

MadamNoo · 01/02/2015 21:42

Patrick Ness - fantastic
Gone series, Michael Grant, very American and slightly more trashy
enjoyed both myself very much after DS!

Bowwowchikkawowwow · 01/02/2015 21:43

Perfect, need some book ideas for ds

WineCowboy · 01/02/2015 21:46

Yy Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, it's incredible.
Blood Red Road and following books by Moira Young are amazing.
Virals by Kathy Reichs is really good for that age.
Also the books by Suzanne Collins (hunger games) called Gregor the Overlander etc are really excellent too.

I have to read them first to check that dd would like them obviously Grin and Blush

RoadRunner123 · 01/02/2015 21:47

I second the Sophie Mackenzie recommendation. My 12 year old DS loved the books you mentioned and is just finishing the Split Second book and its sequel which he read very fast! He's going to try some more of her books next.

I've got the first of the Cherub books in my Amazon basket for him too.

WineCowboy · 01/02/2015 21:47

Oh and Holes by Louis Sachar, favourite book ever.

AndHarry · 01/02/2015 21:52

The Wind Singer trilogy is good.

BlueChampagne · 01/02/2015 22:14

Alan Garner

thehumanjam · 01/02/2015 22:17

1984

BlueChampagne · 01/02/2015 22:19

The Grapes of Wrath

Filmbuffmum · 01/02/2015 22:31

Madeleine L'Engel: A Wrinkle in Time, A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet?

Lucked · 01/02/2015 22:32

Ready Player One by Earnest Cline

Lucked · 01/02/2015 22:38

And Enders Game series

BatmanLovesBakedBeans · 01/02/2015 22:43

Gone series recommendation here too.

Also Charlie Higson's Enemy series, and Anthony Horowitz's Power of Five series (the first being Raven's Gate).

AndHarry · 02/02/2015 22:22

Princess Academy. Not at all princessy but about a poor mountain community and their climb from subsistence into prosperity through the education of their daughters.

Clobbered · 02/02/2015 22:27

DS loved Maze Runner and has just started another series by the same author (13th reality? I think) - seems to be going down very well.
Is she into animals? the Erin Hunter books e.g. Warrior Cats series have been very popular too (there are series about dogs and bears too I think)

mrsmortis · 05/02/2015 14:13

How about some epic fantasy. The Pawn of Prophecy by David Eddings is a good place to start with that genre and I was in my second year at secondary school the first time I read it. I think that in the wake of Harry Potter they were repackaged and sold as YA fiction.

Or how about the early Pern books by Anne McCaffrey (Dragonsong is probably a good place to start) or her Talents books (The Rowan). They all star strong female characters but they aren't particularly girly if that makes sense.

Or the Tripod books or the Prince in Waiting ones by John Christoper.

mrsmortis · 06/02/2015 10:06

Oh and if you live in, or often visit, London have a look at Stone Heart by Charlie Fletcher. It's cool because you recognise so many of the places and statues in it.

Also anything by Tamora Peirce. The Song of the Lioness quartet mentions one of the characters having sex, but other than that they should be fine for younger girl.

I love Garth Nix. If she's fine with The Hunger Games then I would look at Sabriel as a starting place.

Enders Game by Scott Orson Card is another one to make you think. I recently gave a copy to my 12 year old Nephew and he was engrossed by it.

Jane Yolen's Dragons Blood and it's sequels are really good.

Going a bit further back, some of the pulp scifi from before we were born might work. Isaac Asimov's Lucky Starr books for example. Or I, Robot.

Wow, that's a long list. And the scary thing is that there is nothing there that I don't own (me not my girls...). Its a good thing that there is no such thing as owning too many book.

QueenofLouisiana · 17/02/2015 20:05

Thank you for all the ideas on this thread. DS is gobbling up the Hunger Games trilogy do I need done new ideas.

He's read hunger games, now on Catching Fire, read Ready Player One a few weeks ago. Are these other books likely to be ok for him- he's 10 in May.
