Dd gas almost read all the books she got for Christmas, her birthday is soon so she would like some more books, nothing girly. Any ideas?

Queenoflouisuana - if your son is only 9 I would not recommend:-

Noughts and Crosses

The Cherub series

The Gone series

The Enemy series

1984

The Grapes of Wrath

Chaos Walking series

as the content is intended for a much older audience.

Ok, good tips- thank you.

It's not my type of book at all so I'm in the dark here. I'm hoping to get him interested in Pratchett, at least I know what he's reading then.

Maybe try The Missing Link series for him. And Tunnels, Deeper, Free Fall etc. And as a one off, The House on Falling Star Hill (I love this, I still re-read it sometimes). Oh, and The Bromeliad (especially if you're a Pratchett fan!).

Early Cherub books would probably be ok, but they get very grown up very quickly.

For Endlers DD, has she read Eragon? That's getting a bit more into high fantasy. The Midnighters series might be good too. There's the Uglies series too, but it might be a bit old (although I wouldn't have suggested The Hunger Games for an 11 year old, so she might be fine).

Skulduggery Pleasant! Lots of them, strong female lead, darkness, humour.

I worry quite a lot when my year 7 pick up the Gone series. They are extremely violent with (IMO) strong phallic imagery an implied sexual violence from one of the nastier characters. I also struggled with the deaths of babies/young children (not really a spoiler - incidental to the story and happens very early on) but I'm sure that was more distressing to me as a mum. IMO much much more adult than hunger games or divergent. My year 9 are nagging me to read maze runner - they say it's great. The cherub ones deal with teen romantic relationships. Not sure if there might be a difference between a year 6/year 7 reader in maturity?

Artemis Fowl is a great fun series!
