Please, any unusual/ less heard of suggestions.

She has read all the classics, that I can think of.
Most of the modern books that appeal to her.
She's not into Jaqueline Wilson or Twighlight.
She's not into Lord of the ring.

Most recent reads have been The incorrigibles.

She reads a book a day on average.
Sorry, not stealth boast, she is H.ed and has lots of time to read.

Before stinkingbishop and I get in trouble for hijacking, has she read Heidi?

wearymum200 · 18/03/2014 19:27

Chronicles of Prydain
Philippa Pearce other than Tom's Midnight Garden (assuming she's already read that): Minnow on the Say, The way to Sattin shore, The Children of Charlecote
The endless steppe
Emily of New Moon
Summer of the Zeppelin
Jenny Nimmo: The Snow Spider trilogy, Secret Kingdom
When Hitler stole pink rabbit
Mistress Masham's repose
The Messenger Bird

Try Fidra books and Girls Gone By publishers for reissued "classics"

I read Alistair Maclean books when I was young! I enjoyed them. Not entirely sure they are age-appropriate though. Grin

The Mortal Engine series?

UptoapointLordCopper · 19/03/2014 18:10

Oh and Artemis Fowl? Percy Jackson? These are the books my 10yo DS like.

Has she read Heidi?

MrsBartlet · 21/03/2014 09:32

If she enjoyed the classics she has read then she should like the following, all published in the last few years -

The Wolf Princess - Cathryn Constable
The Haunting of Charity Delafield - Ian Beck
Frost Hollow Hall - Emma Carroll
A Boy Called M.O.U.S.E - Penny Dolan

All great books.

I second the person who suggested Eva Ibbotson! Some of my favourites include Dial-A-Ghost, Monster Mission and Journey to the River Sea (although she wrote many more).

Other suggestions: Hilary McKay, J.K. Rowling, Michael Morpurgo, Roald Dahl, Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, David Walliams, Enid Blyton, Astrid Lindgren, Michelle Magorian, Lois Lowry, Anne Fine, Jeanne du Prau, C.S. Lewis, Lemony Snicket, Noel Streatfeild... I would mention more, but my memory has gone blank!

As for classics... Charlotte Sometimes; Tom's Midnight Garden; Swallows and Amazons; The Phantom Tollbooth; The Wonderful Wizard of Oz; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass; Charlotte's Web; The Secret Garden; A Little Princess; and Pollyanna, among others!

My 9yr old dd would recommend the Tales from Schwartzgarten by Christopher William Hill, first one is Osbert the Avenger, second The Woebegone Twins.

They're quite dark and a little gruesome in places but funny and well written.

lalasmum17 · 03/04/2014 18:40

There is something very delightful about being able to sneak upstairs for an hour or two as a kid to read a book from cover to cover.

I used to whizz through Enid Blyton books. As well as the Famous Five there are Secret Sevens, Mallory Towers (Boarding school series - might seem too old fashioned), the Mystery of...series and the Adventure of...series. I didn't get on with Arthur Ransom (Swallows and Amazon etc)

Have you "done" CS Lewis (Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe etc"?

Or the Philip Pullman Golden Compass etc

I (re)discovered all manner of "classics" on the Book People site (Wizard of Oz, Secret Garden etc). it might be worth browsing there (an expensive habit, though).

Could the school or the library give you a steer?

JokersGiggle · 04/04/2014 16:20

Toms midnight garden by phillippa Pearce
The little white horse by Elizabeth goudge
The Anne of green gables series is great.
Ballet shoes but can't remember who its by.
The Artemis fowl collect is amazing.
I've read all those books so many times I know them by heart!

JokersGiggle · 04/04/2014 16:24

National velvet - I think its by the lady who did famous five. Totally amazing!

Clutterbugsmum · 04/04/2014 17:04

As already mentioned Rick Riordan. He has the Percy Jackson series about greek gods, he also The Kane Chronicles about eygpt gods. My 10dd loves history and loves these books.
