He loves reading and I can't keep up!

I downloaded all of the Percy Jackson books, but that's it. I'm all out of ideas.

He's read all of the Alex Rider books, he's working his way through all of the Roald Dhal box set and the Michael Morpurgo box set. He's got The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit to read.

He has asked me about the Hunger Games, which I've not read and not knowing much about it, I'm thinking its too old?

Anyone got any recommendations?

Charlie Bone series
Philip Pullman Northern Lights
I'm assuming he's read Harry Potter

DoItTooBabyJesus · 27/12/2013 21:30

He hasn't read Harry potter, I don't think. He may have read book one. I'll check!

I also think he's read all of the Phillip Pullman stuff. Again, I'll check.

Never heard of Charlie Bone. Will check that out.

Thank you!

David Walliams books?

Redoubtable · 27/12/2013 21:38

Similar age reader DS has loved 'Wonder' by RJ Palacio, the Narnia series, is wading through all the Artemis Fowl books, 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas', and 'The London Eye Mystery' is currently being read.

He has heard of Hunger Games (especially since it seems there's a Minecraft version of it) but I think its probably a bit too much for him yet (vivid imagination would lead to nightmares I fear).

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 27/12/2013 21:40

I second 'wonder' , lovely book. Also the abominables by Eva Ibbotson

anchovies · 27/12/2013 21:44

Ds (also 9 and also got a kindle for Christmas!) has really enjoyed the hunger games, he is halfway through the second one at the moment. He also loves skullduggery pleasant.

DoItTooBabyJesus · 27/12/2013 21:48

Ah, great thanks all.

He's read all of the David Walliams books. I think he found them a bit babyish too. Thanks though!

Will check out the others. I didn't realise the was a minecraft version of HG. No doubt that's where he has heard about it!

DD read the Hunger games when she was 10, I think they are ok, bit graphic but amazing. I would have said Percy Jackson too!

Also, Harry Potter is brill!

Anything by Louis Sachar, Holes is an amazing book.

DoItTooBabyJesus · 27/12/2013 21:56

Ah, so Percy Jackson is on a par with the Hunger Games?

babblington · 27/12/2013 21:57

Diana wynne jones- all are brilliant. Osbert the avenger. The school for good and evil. The dark is rising.

babblington · 27/12/2013 21:59

Oh, and percy Jackson is nothing like the hunger games, much more child friendly. Eva ibbotson is good. Suzanne Collins also the Gregor the over lander books which are brilliant for 9-10 year olds.

fruitpastille · 27/12/2013 22:00

Hunger Games is much more graphic and serious than Percy Jackson. Futuristic dystopian novel where teenagers fight to the death as entertainment and to control the masses. Good but not for 9 year olds imo.

babblington · 27/12/2013 22:07

Agreed with fruitpastile, also leads to wanting to watch the films which are much too adult for a 9 yeAr old.

Primrose123 · 27/12/2013 22:13

The Roman Mysteries?, my DD loved these. Also the Artemis Fowl books, the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz, the My Story Diaries, the Silver Sword by Ian Seraillier, I am David (but I don't think that's on kindle), and the Young Bond series by Charlie Higson.

My DD is also a voracious reader! We used to find it really hard to find books for her.

CheckpointCharlie · 27/12/2013 22:13

Percy Jackson is a bit tamer and more lighthearted, Hunger Games is darker, but maybe in a year?!

Has anyone mentioned Anthony Horowitz (sp)? On DD's to read list.

CheckpointCharlie · 27/12/2013 22:14

Xpost!

Try looking for year 6 reading lists from various schools online - or this one
www.educatingtogether.co.uk/resource/Children's%20Reading%20Book%20List%20KS2%20Y6%20(10-11yrs).pdf

Also Malorie Blackman, the current children's laureate, has written for a range of age groups, and lovereading4kids.com is a good site that categorises by gender and age range

slug · 28/12/2013 16:21

H.I.V.E. series or Skullduggery Pleasant.

QueenofLouisiana · 30/12/2013 21:15

Dr Proctor books by Jo Nesbo? DS loves these.

emmalaybourn · 31/12/2013 12:23

If he's a really voracious reader, you can find free children's ebooks on self-publishing sites like Smashwords. Self-published books are of very variable quality, but I've been trawling through Smashwords to find the best ones in order to list them on my blog, at Goodreads here:

www.goodreads.com/author/show/780587.Emma_Laybourn/blog
You'll find several posts where I've listed readable free ebooks for kids aged about 6 to 12, and given rough age guidelines. There are links to the Smashwords page for each book (they're nearly all available for Kindle.)
These are independent lists: I have no connection with the authors.

I don't suggest these as a substitute for professionally written books, but as a supplement that might save your pocket!

wearymum200 · 03/01/2014 21:02

Ranger's Apprentice, Brotherband, Mortal Engines series, Secret Kingdom and other books by Jenny Nimmo, The Letter for the King, Pseudonymous Bosch, Young Samurai series, Powder Monkey series
DS1 munches his way through Biggles on my kindle, but they are amusingly old-fashioned so not for everyone!

Queenofknickers · 03/01/2014 21:37

The Eragon series by C Paolini and the Charlie Hickson books - and DEF the Harry Potters!!!!!!

ladydepp · 03/01/2014 21:41

Young Sherlock Holmes books are popular with my 11yo DS who has also loved the Alex Rider, young James Bond and yes the Hunger games books.

There's a Rick Riordan series that he enjoys too, can't recall the name.

UniS · 05/01/2014 19:36

Some terry pratchet?
"Maurice and his educated rodents " & "the Wee Free men" Are the two I'd start a voracious 9 year old with.

Louis Sachar is indeed great.
