the chrysalids - John Wyndham
the tripod trilogy and the prince in waiting trilogy - John Christopher
The dark is rising sequence - susan cooper
The Hero and the Crown - Robin McKinley
Holes - Louis Sachar
Also have a look at Newbery medal winners

Cherub series gets my sins vote

Horopu · 06/09/2012 08:34

Heriot by Margaret Mahey
Louis Sacher - The Card turner

foodfiend · 06/09/2012 16:18

How about Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragon' series?

foodfiend · 06/09/2012 16:29

Actually, scratch that. Probably not really suitable for most 12 year olds.

mummytime · 06/09/2012 16:56

The Dragon singer ones are suitable, the dragon rider ones less so. The former were written with teens in mind (so no sex really).

Definitely recommend Alex Rider.

DontSayWhatSayPardon · 06/09/2012 22:08

Abhorsen Trilogy, Garth Nix

Jux · 08/09/2012 16:19

Malice by Chris Wooding. Worth getting paper form for the cover.

Seriously creepy.

Purpletoes · 08/09/2012 16:39

Abhorsen trilogy by Gareth nix
Across the nightingale floor series by lian Hearn
The alchemist series by Michael Scott

All good ya books.

MagnaInOrangeAndGold · 08/09/2012 16:50

Purple you read my mind was going to suggest Garth Nix Smile

Also Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke

Any of the Darren Shan books

Allalonenow · 08/09/2012 16:54

Rosemary Sutcliff's "Eagle of the Ninth" "The Silver Branch" " The Lantern Bearers" "Swords at Sunset" are all very well written and enjoyable.

imperialstateknickers · 10/09/2012 19:55

Magna, not EVERY Darren Shan. When he's DB Shan, they are rather more disturbing, definitely more adult than young adult. I've put a set away, dd1 can have them when she's 16.

MrsBitchArseUsedToBeBran · 10/09/2012 20:43

Also The City trilogy is now published under the name Darren Shan, the first two were originally published under Darren O'Shaughnessy. They are great, but very adult in an explict sex and violence sort of way.

GrimmaTheNome · 10/09/2012 22:50

Ah - we have done pratchet
Surely not 'done' by 12...there's the whole of discworld after the children's books Grin

My 13yr old DD still likes me to read at bedtime and for the last few months that's what we've been on - we've got to 'Guards, guards' and loads more to go.

Her own reading at the moment is mostly re-reading (having loved Hunger games last year) - all the potters and then decided swallows and amazons was the perfect choice for a watersports holiday... it doesn't all have to be dystopia and fantasy.

Blu · 10/09/2012 22:54

re the Cherub series - DS (11) started reading these as a substitute for the Alex Rider series he had devoured...and then someone told me that after the first few there is prostitution, drugs etc. has anyone actually read them?

valiumredhead · 11/09/2012 09:42

Yes, there does seem to be quite a lot of drug talk BUT it is in context and age appropriate imo.

gimmesunshine · 11/09/2012 10:19

Some of the suggestions are great and I'm going to look some up as I love to read these books as well. Can I add another name to the list: Skulduggery Pleasant by Derek Landy, great books with a skeleton detective.

valiumredhead · 11/09/2012 10:21

Skullduggery Pleasant is a favourite in this house too!

CiderwithBuda · 11/09/2012 12:58

Was going to recommend the Cherub series too. DS doesn't like any fantasy books so we have really struggled to get him beyond Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He devoured the Cherub series over the summer. I read the first one but none of the others yet.

He is now reading the Chris Ryan YA books.

Have Hunger Games ready for him once he is finished the Chris Ryan ones.

I am about to read Harry Potter hoping to get him interested. We havent even seen the movies as I want him to read the books first. Don't think I will manage it though.

imnotmymum · 11/09/2012 12:59

We got the DVD last week and promptly went out to buy the books. I did not see my DC for 2 days whilst polishing them off. I am just starting to read them. So thanks for this thread they are getting bored with Morganville vampires!!

valiumredhead · 11/09/2012 13:01

I downloaded The Declaration on my kindle for 99p the other day - just reading it to make sure it;s ok before handing it over to ds. It's like 1984 for younger readers.

frenchfancy · 11/09/2012 13:26

How did you get it for 99p valium? Was it a daily deal I missed? I've just finished divergent (very good) and The Declaration looks equally interesting.
