Darren Shan series - kept my 12 yr old going all summer

Cherub series - Robert Muchamore

Inkheart - again, don't know much about it but my 12 yr old DD said it was all about a 12 yr old book lover so she felt she was reading about herself.

There are sooooo many dystopian-type YA books around at the moment. If the 12 yr old belongs to you, park them in front of the YA section at the library.

A few specific recommendations; Veronica Roth, Gemma Malley, Malorie Blackman. (really aimed at teens, but a 12 year old who isn't disturbed by HG won't be by these, IMO).

Or, for the right age group, Artemis Fowl series.

I bought him Warriors by Edith Hunter last night (made him read the sample first, and he liked it).

Thank you so much for the suggestions burmac and Disorderly Nights

He is nearly a teen (next week he is 13)

Phillip Pullman's 'Dark Materials' trilogy' is meant to be really good

DisorderlyNights · 01/09/2012 17:33

Ah, it's a DS. More YA fiction written by women for some reason. Not that boys can't enjoy books by women, but they sometimes think they can't. (good on yours!)
Itch by Simon Mayo meant to be v good, haven't read it yet. Also Patrick Ness, meant to be best male YA writer of the moment (he's certainly v amusing on Twitter.)

NormaStanleyFletcher · 01/09/2012 17:53

It is a DS (sorry I didn't mention, but I hope it wouldn't make a difference - I would like strong female characters for both DS and DD)

WHY did I not think of Dark Materials. I loved that when I read it as an adult when it came out. That is next. (and it means I can re-read it too as we share an account - thankfully he never looks at stuff downloaded by me and DH Shock Wink )

The Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness or Noughts and Crosses series by Malorie Blackman.

amck5700 · 01/09/2012 18:31

My sons loved both these and the Cherub books and Gone etc Michael Grant and the Tunnels series too.

Longtallsally · 01/09/2012 18:40

Legend by Marie Lu - fab, fab, fab

Has he read Michelle Paver's Wolf Brother series too?

The Chaos Walking books are pretty disturbing - do read them first. I loved them but am holding them back for ds for when he is 15ish.

Noting some of these ideas for my ds too, who also loved HG

MrsBitchArseUsedToBeBran · 01/09/2012 18:46

I was going to suggest the Tripod trilogy by John Christopher, but I've just checked and it's not available for Kindle. A Wrinkle in Time is available on the Kindle and it's good. It's what I was reading when I was about that age, and I would have loved Hunger Games then. My favourite book as a young teen was This Star Shall Abide, also available for Kindle.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 01/09/2012 18:56

Thank you all. Will keep referring back to this as he finishes another.

He has become a bit of a reader - so much so, that I had to catch him out turning his light on after midnight

Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines, anything by Frances Hardinge, Terry Pratchett (start with his Tiffany Aching and Truckers books and move on from then), Artemis Fowl, Percy Jackson, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 01/09/2012 19:08

Ah - we have done pratchet. Smile

Not thought of HHGTTG

Longtall - I did read them first - my 12 and 11 year old boys have both read them.

maybenow · 01/09/2012 19:10

after the hunger games, the 'his dark materials' trilogy by phillip pullman would be good - stars with 'northern lights'.

Shoshe · 01/09/2012 19:57

Christopher Palolini's Eragon Series as well

nooka · 02/09/2012 18:59

My two really enjoyed Divergent

GoldPlatedNineDoors · 02/09/2012 19:02

Curious Incident of the dog in the night time

The boy in the striped pyjamas

Gullivers Travels

the hobbit

Lemony Snickets series of unfortunate events

Bluestocking · 02/09/2012 19:03

Michael Grant's six-book series (Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, Bzrk) are really gripping. Not particularly well-written but despite that, strong characters in a really well-imagined dystopian setting.

MattDamonIsMyLover · 02/09/2012 19:04

DS read a series with titles like Plague, Lies by Michael Grant, I think. Quite gory from what I gather.

RustyBear · 02/09/2012 19:05

Shadow Runners by Daniel Blythe

Tschiffely · 02/09/2012 19:06

G P Taylor, Marcus Sedgewick, Mal Peet

valiumredhead · 02/09/2012 19:37

Cherub Series definitely! Ds can't put them down.

Have heard good things about Alex Rider too.

iGaveUpTeaToControlCats · 03/09/2012 20:10

I loved the Hunger Games and am the same age as your daughter. If she likes those then chances are she will enjoy Harry Potter, the Gone Series, possibly - even though it is different in style, it is dystopian and I personally loved it - 1984, Fly By Night, Lord of the Rings, The Guide...

And now I am going to add in the book that all of my friends think is suckish (I had to beg them to read it for about a year) but has been my favourite since I was eight; I really really loved Mortal Engines, and the series, and more recently have loved Fever Crumb and the series. They are amazing (by Philip Reeve).

NormaStanleyFletcher · 04/09/2012 17:53

Thank you all for your suggestions.

These will keep us going for a while.

I am definitely going to get him Dark Materials next - I would like to re-read it as well!
