Suggestions for a gift box of books for a new baby

I'm wanting to put together a "gift box" of classic picture books as a gift for my new niece/nephew (due at Christmas).

Some favourites I've thought of already are,
The tiger who came to tea
Owl babies
The cat in the hat
The gruffalo
The very hungry caterpillar
Hairy maclary
Alfie gets in first
Mog on fox night

I'm trying to think of books that might be nice for mum and dad to read as bedtime stories to the baby and also great pictures for toddlers too.

Which classics (in your opinion!) have I missed off my list?

I work with kids and I must have read thousands of bedtime stories over the years but my mind is going blank at trying to put together 10-15 great books!

Thanks

Dogger by Shirley Hughes - the greatest children's book ever written.

The Alfie and Annie-Rose books are also fabulous (also Shirley Hughes)

PotteringAlong · 25/11/2011 18:42

Doh! Just spotted Alfie already on your list! Sorry!

The Elephant and the Bad Baby

PotteringAlong - someone bought me Dogger when DS was born 8 months ago and I still can't read it without blubbering. So beautiful.

NotaTeacherBasher · 25/11/2011 18:48

Peepo - Alan & Janet Alberg

zinfandel · 25/11/2011 18:51

Guess How Much I Love You - Sam McBratney, Anita Jeram

Takver · 25/11/2011 19:00

Mick Inkpen - not so much Kipper (though that too) but things like The Blue Balloon, Billy's Beetle, Lullabyhullabaloo, Nothing etc
Dear Zoo

We were given as board books when dd was very small:
The Helen Oxenbury version of We're going on a Bear Hunt
Rosie's Walk
Peepo
All Join In by Quentin Blake

all of which I would recommend

Spot
A book of nursery rhymes - lavender's blue is good
Peter Rabbit
?The Jolly Postman?
A couple of ladybird or usborne type easy airy stories - the magic porridge pot/cinderella/little red riding hood/the billy goats gruff - things where there is a question and answer or chorus
godson (3) loving easy Brer Rabbit as well as Owl babies

Faster Faster Nice and Slow or Red Rockets and Rainbow Jelly by Nick Sharratt and Sue Heap (think this is right) - brilliant for babies and my five year old still enjoys them. Also, Meg and Mog.

The Jez Alborough Bobo books - Hug is a particular favourite.

Gerald was a tall giraffe by Giles Andreae

Trizelda · 26/11/2011 22:31

The Velveteen Rabbit

startail · 26/11/2011 22:35

Mike inkpen - Bear
I don't want to go to bed, with the little tiger.
DD1s favourite is room on the broom.

PontyMython · 26/11/2011 22:36

Tanka tanka skunk - great rhythm and the pictures are lovely to look at.

Some 'that's not my...' board books would be good as a baby will be able to get their teeth into it (literally) much earlier than a paperback.

Monkey and Me - Emily Gravett

Absolutely brilliant, great rhymes and rhythms. I must have read it 20 times a day for a year when DS was 1-2ish, with lovely illustrations. Very much looking forward to reading it to DD too.

Ness the Nurse - Nick Sharratt
The only board book we had that actually had a story line. Will be reread long after all other board books have been chewed and thrown away. Can't link easily , but amazon.
