Hi

My DS loved Fantastic mr Fox, The BFG & Charlie & the chocolate Factory...

But he seems a tad scared of The witches & George's marvelous medicine so we have abandoned them Sad

Mrs Pepperpot did not spark any interest Sad

I have just ordered James & the giant peach from Amazon.....but am just wondering if anyone has other suggestions, but nothing with witches in as it seems to scare him

Try "Good As Gold" by Barbara Baumgartner ISBN 0-7513-7165-3 and
"The Barefoot Book of Bhuddist Tales" ISBN 1-84148-009-6

Danny Champion of the World has been a favourite in this house. Mr Gum is doing well round here these days.

MarionCole · 27/01/2011 23:06

A related question - at what point were your children prepared to listen to a chapter at a time, rather than a whole (short) story in one go? When do you move on from Gruffalo to Dahl?

NimpyWindowmash · 27/01/2011 23:07

Mr Gum, is brilliant, much loved by my 8yr old, maybe he will not get it at 5. What about Flat Stanley?

tattycoram · 27/01/2011 23:10

Marion my DS has just turned four and is really enjoying Danny the Champion... it's the first chapter book we've done with him. I thought he would be a bit young but he loves it. Not sure what to do next thought so will watch with interest

Pancakeflipper · 27/01/2011 23:11

Esio Trot was enjoyed in our home and The Twits?

We have recently done Stig of the Dump. Doing Charlottes Web. Done Winnie the Pooh. He laughs at Captain Underpants.

tattycoram · 27/01/2011 23:11

Ooooh Flat Stanley is a great book

simpson · 27/01/2011 23:13

Mr. Stink has been popular here(with me as well).Written by the very funny David Walliams.

StuffingGoldBrass · 27/01/2011 23:15

Horrid Henry? Though this may well lead to a certain amount of additional naughtiness...

FunnysInTheGarden · 27/01/2011 23:18

curses message lost. The Twits is great and DS1 (5) loves it. We read a few chapters every night.

Dahl is totally my favourite childrens author and I can't wait to read James and The Giant Peach to DS. My favourite book as a child.

manicbmc · 27/01/2011 23:19

Horris Henry is great. I love it when children at school choose to read those ones to me.

FunnysInTheGarden · 27/01/2011 23:21

and can't wait for Stig of the Dump, Gobilina The Witches Cat, Mrs Pepperpot and The Little Wooden Horse. Even though he is a boy, I will make him love them Grin

Oh and not to mention The MoominTrolls.......

OgreTripletsAreSoCute · 27/01/2011 23:21

Magic Faraway Tree has been popular with both of mine.

manicbmc · 27/01/2011 23:23

E Nesbitt's books are good too. Not at all scary.

Does your son like dinosaurs? (he's 5 - silly question Wink). I'm currently reading my son the Dinosaur Cove books. Each chapter is a good tale in itself, but part of a bigger story. Have been working through them for the last 6 months (interspersed with others and nights of I'm too tired for a story since he started school. Hope this link is helpful www.dinosaurcove.co.uk/noflash/about.php Smile

Paddington Bear - the novel form.

Frawli · 30/01/2011 20:46

I'd forgotten about Flat Stanley!!! Thanks for the reminder. I will have to persuade my mum to see if it's in her attic, I'd love to read DS my old copy, you can get the book new but the pictures are different.

posadas · 31/01/2011 16:17

One more suggestion: The Wind in the Willows. It was the first big book we read to our son -- a great treat for him and for my husband and me.

Amongst Dahl books -- The Giraffe, the Pelly and Me is fun to read aloud.

munstersmum · 31/01/2011 20:03

Mudpuddle Farm collection by M Morpurgo
Paddington
The Minpins (love the pictures), the hungry crocodile
Prefer Dirty Bertie to Horrid Henry
For something completely different but big hit with DS age 6 - Yakari & great eagle
