Agree with Diana Wynne Jones, she does magic so well (and more succinct than HP!) - Witch Week, Charmed Life, The Magicians of Caprona, also Dogsbody, The Ogre Downstairs, The Power of Three, Howl's Moving Castle etc.

Also agree with The Dark Is Rising series.

When I was about 9, Mum read me The Secret Garden and A Little Princess - loved both of them.

Charlotte Sometimes I read around that age too, it haunted me for ages - in a good way, I mean!

To keep up the magical mystery theme: The Chronicles of Narnia series or any of the younger books by Eva Ibbotson (esp The Secret of Platform 13, which might have served as a bit of inspiration for HP....;) or, for a change of pace, The Wind in the Willows.

I'd really recommend The Belgariad by David Eddings (a series of five books, then there are five more and a couple of companion volumes). They're about sorcerers and they're teh awesome.

I read them when I was a young teenager and recently re-read. Still love them, even if they are a bit like the comfort-food of the reading world Smile.
