hobbit

Pterosaur · 25/01/2011 20:35

Dear God. Medal to DH.

FreudianSlippery · 25/01/2011 20:36

I second the hobbit :o

Has she read any Artemis Fowl?

FreudianSlippery · 25/01/2011 20:39

Btw can I just say - and I hope it doesnt sound patronising - it's fantastic that she is 'still' enjoying being read to. It's a shame when bedtime stories stop at a young age - I hope my DCs enjoy it until their teens!

DH and I often read stories to each other - in fact we started with the last few HPs! So to you Pterosaur! :o

i'm reading the lemony snicket a series of unfortunate events (13 books!) to ds1 age 9 at moment. brilliantly written, gripping, funny and lots of literary jokes for the adult reader.

cluelessnchaos · 25/01/2011 20:42

Lemony snickers series of unfortunate events, dd2 loved them

cluelessnchaos · 25/01/2011 20:43

Bloody iPad auto correct and xpost

cocolepew · 25/01/2011 20:45

Percy Jackson, Time Riders, Wimpy Kid books

Pterosaur · 25/01/2011 20:45

Sorry, was I being rude? What a feat of stamina though! I like HP, but have never read it out loud. How long did it take, Emkana? I seem to remember that book 6 takes Stephen Fry about 24 hours.

I agree with Lemony Snicket, particularly for DH's benefit.

FreudianSlippery · 25/01/2011 20:46

Ah yes, the ASOUE series is fabulous.

Don't be put off by the film which was rather innacurate (a word which here means shite)

Also what about some Sherlock Holmes or similar?

It'd be good if you told us what else she's enjoyed, or hated.

FreudianSlippery · 25/01/2011 20:47

Ah ok pterosaur I thought you meant because they are rubbish Shock

Pterosaur · 25/01/2011 20:48

As if.

emkana · 25/01/2011 20:49

Some great ideas thank you! She enjoys classics like the secret garden when reading to herself. Keep them coming!

They started reading HP when she was six or maybe seven. Better still, he is doing it allover again with dd2 - he is on book five with her!

Was thinking maybe Philip Pullman, any thoughts?

Oh, God. Emkanan. We have just started Book 2.

Oooh yes his dark materials are fantastic. Much more intense than HP I'd say.

In fact I'm vaguely thinking if we have another girl, of using the name Lyra. Strong character :)

Blu · 25/01/2011 20:53

Another medal for your DH! (I read the first HP to Ds and hated it, god her convoluted senstences are hard and tedious to read aloud).

DS, 9, reads voraciously to himself, but we always have a book on the go that i read to him. We have done Swallows and Amazons, Swallowdale and Peter Duck (I edit out the tedious passages and dodgy old fashioned stuff), and am now on the Enid Blyton 'Island Adventure' etc series.

The Alex Ryder books by Anthony Horowitz? DS has just decalred them better than HP.

FreudianSlippery · 25/01/2011 20:55

How about wolves of willoughby chase etc? By Joan Aiken.

Attenborough · 25/01/2011 20:57

Philip Pullman is fab - not just His Dark Materials but also the Ruby Lockhart books (which I think I prefer). Cracking yarns.

LadySanders · 25/01/2011 20:57

i've got to read HP when we finish L Snicket - am dreading it as i read the 1st book when it came out and thought it was dire, let's just say i plan to do a lot of editing as i read (if only JKR had done the same...)

Ariesgirl · 25/01/2011 20:59

I'm always recommending this, but I really feel every child in the kingdom should have it read to them :); the Mortal Engines quartet by Phillip Reeve. And the Wind on Fire series by William Nicholson.

Pterosaur · 25/01/2011 21:00

His Dark Materials is great. Northern Lights is fine for a 9 year-old, particularly if she's having it read to her, but it does get darker and more complex as the series goes on.

Anthony Horowitz
Rick Riordan (too Potteresque, possibly)
Terry Pratchett

Pterosaur · 25/01/2011 21:01

Jeanette Winterson - Tanglewreck

Blu · 25/01/2011 21:02
