Maltesers packets

Anyone seen those Maltesers packets with mum quotes on, like "I love working with people who know the juggle is real" - Deb, mum of 3, or "when the boss knows the baby has pulled an all nighter and brings me a coffee" - Angie, mum of 3, etc?

Nooooo......but they sound awful to me.

Florissante · 24/06/2023 17:32

Haven't seen one but they sound annoying.

EllaRaines · 24/06/2023 17:35

How patronising of them.

BonnieGlasses · 24/06/2023 17:37

I haven't seen them but I seriously couldn't get worked up about something like this. There are some really bizarre threads on this new board. Hmm

HeidiUpTheMountain · 24/06/2023 17:37

Maltesers are my absolute favourite, and DH keeps me in a regular supply, but I haven’t noticed these - to be fair that might be because I don’t often look at the outside in my haste to get into them asap, but regardless, that’s awful marketing. How patronising.

Googling suggests it's something to do with Comic Relief's maternal mental health campaign

Fair enough, but then surely it should be placed on a product that is primarily used by their target audience? Maltesers are appealing to a much wider audience. I medicated my way through the first few years of perimenopause with regular applications as needed.

Nomorenonbinary · 24/06/2023 17:49

They had an ad campaign that focused on disability once. Did you resent that too?

KimberleyClark · 24/06/2023 18:06

I don't remember that campaign. This campaign focusses on working mums, and I'm not sure being a working mum compares with having a disability. I'm not saying there isn't a place for such a campaign, but not sure this is the right way to go about it.

I haven't seen them- trying to eat less chocolate- but know that malteasers are really involved in maternal mental health and supporting women returning from maternity leave at the moment. Honestly these packets sound irritating and patronising and I say that as a mum who has recently returned to work FT from having my second, but I do think the work they're doing is important

I don’t recall that, but disability can affect anyone, so it makes sense to use something which is bought by the widest possible audience. Working mums is a much more targeted demographic, and there should be better ways to reach them. Such as via their workplace.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 24/06/2023 18:12

The malteasers disability TV adverts were really vulgar. I didn't like them at all. I haven't seen their women's mental health packets but they sound a bit cringe too.

Regardless, I love them and will continue to consume them at regular intervals Wink

smithyyholden · 24/06/2023 18:35

Oh my goodness. Really? How can you get worked up at this?

Some people have been bullied out of jobs, had to leave jobs, had their working lives made miserable etc because of parents or the way managers treat parents. It isn’t hard to imagine why someone would be annoyed by a malteasers packet telling them they need to ‘respect the juggle’ when they themselves get no respect at work.

smithyyholden · 24/06/2023 18:44

I really don't think it's that deep...

Anything can feel deep to someone when it’s upsetting to them. Lots of things that upset or annoy other people wouldn’t annoy or upset me and the same the other way, but we are all different and anyone is allowed to vent about anything. That’s what about 85% of all online forums are!

smithyyholden · 24/06/2023 18:54

Ok this is fair enough, I suppose I didn't consider it like that. So it my comment was offensive, I apologise @Clownfishies

SeaSaltAir · 24/06/2023 19:14

It sounds patronising to me. I doubt they’d do one aimed at working fathers who like a bit chocolate.

Derrygoat · 24/06/2023 19:18

Are they raising money for a charity or something? I actually have one of these bags in the cupboard - thought it was strange!

There was some concern from those within the community about those adverts - this is a good example - https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/oct/31/maltesers-advertisments-disability-disabled-actors.

I haven’t noticed these packets and don’t have an issue with it or the campaign, which is clearly important. It’s a bit of a weird fit but then that was the same with the disability campaign too.

Mostly I just think it’s a bit arrogant that Maltesers seem to think that they’re the answer to businesses not hiring enough staff and everyone being worked to death - which is why everyone is now having to “juggle”.

Maltesers’ ads with disabled actors make me feel queasy. But at least they’re trying | Disability | The Guardian

The ads are clearly made to educate others rather than show us as three-dimensional humans. But to have disabled people represented at all is progress<br>

Why is commenting on something always being equated to 'being worked up' these days?

It's a backhanded way of implying that whoever is getting worked up is unreasonable to be so over something so trivial.

exactly, that why I was against of a childfree mumsnetter board. Why having a board dedicated to be a childfree when almost everyboard you could write about a subject not related to children? This board is just full of posts againts mothers!!!!

KimberleyClark · 30/06/2023 16:30

I didn't realise what was behind the packets when I first saw them. I'm sorry if it has upset people.
