Who's in your will?

Very grateful this board was created today as I have to update my will.

As it stands, DH will get the lot if I go before him. If be goes before me, or we go together, my (also childfree) brother will get everything. If God forbid they both go before me I'll likely leave it all the charity.

I also want to leave around 10% of my (measley) estate to my best friend, just to give her tiny nest egg.

I need to update mine soon as well.

I genuinely don’t know what to put in it. If anything happens to me while my parents are still around then they get everything, but realistically that’s not likely to happen. I have no siblings (and am not close to any distant family members). There aren’t any particular charities I support, either.

I would leave it to my closest friend, but I think she’d refuse it.

If DH or I die the other gets everything. If we both die our best friend gets everything with 10% to charity. No kids or other relations.

DH will inherit my vast (not) wealth if I die before him (thought if he continues to leave his crap about the house there's no chance of that), and then it all goes to the DC equally.

DH if I go before him. DB has told us we are not to leave our money to my nephew as he will be well provided for. But if there’s anything left over he’ll get it.

Need to do mine but will be DH and if we both go then split between nieces and nephews I think. We have 2 on his side and 3 on mine but potentially more to come.

My DH if I go first and then our daughter gets the lot once we are both gone.

DH, then stepchildren then their children. But after the kerfuffle of the last few months, I want to rewrite it so after DH it's Dsis and Dparents plus a couple of charities. Looking at nearly a million in assets.

DH gets everything, apart from my jewellery which goes to my (childless) sister. In the event of DH and DSis dying at the same time as me, or close afterwards, the whole lot goes to my favourite donkey sanctuary.

We really need to do a will so this thread is interesting.
If something happens to both of us I would think it would go to our siblings but I have more siblings than he has so I’m not sure what a fair split is.
in 20-30 years I imagine we’d update to split among our nieces and nephews but again there’s an uneven number each side.

My sister and best friend (NC with my parents, single, no kids in the family). If both pre-decease me then the lot goes to charity.

Which reminds me, I need to get my will done...

I'm having minor surgery next month so did one in a strange panic 😂

If DH goes before me I think I'll actually do 50/50 with my brother and my best friend, but hopefully that's a bridge I'll never have to cross.

I have no partner and no money, and own no property. As it stands my mum would get my clothes and jewellery which is all I own.

When I do draft one all the main assets will go to DH if he survives me. If not then my sister and her son. He has a sister too but she's childless and older than us both so less likely to inherit.

I worry a bit about how DN will manage, he potentially stands to inherit quite a bit as the only one of his generation. Not so much the actual money, although he's not particularly interested in investing or anything but the admin and the personal effects.

I do want to be able to ensure that he can have some security as he is in a bit of an unstable and poorly paid industry but I don't want to lumber him with loads of art and jewellery and family heirlooms that he has no interest in.

Mirror wills for DP and me, if we die within 30 days of each other it goes to my mother. Will update it if she precedes me - probably split between my biological 2 brothers and 3 sisters with a big chunk to the local dog home.

No children, no OH, and relatives unlikely to survive me.
My will divides my estate with 50% going to Refuge, and 50% going to Victim support.

No children here and no DH/DP so almost everything to charity. I have a clause for someone to look after my dog, with a lump sum to help with costs but other than that I have about 6 charities it will be split between

Mine's currently split five ways between my two nieces and my three closest friends, with two of the friends as executors. I dithered about making one for ages, but then I saw a link for freewills.co.uk on moneysavingexpert, and used them. It was really easy and really was free (I was dubious...). There were several opportunities for paid upgrades, but I ignored them all.

I think that was always going to be a risk.

Apart from a legacy to my favourite cat charity and a few things going to my sister & friends, everything is halved between my niece & nephew.

Me and DH have left everything to each other except for 50% of the house which goes into trust until 2nd death. Then everything goes to our only surviving DC but in the event that they predecease us it gets divided equally between our 7 nieces and nephews (all adults).

One nephew has significant issues with substance abuse and I worry constantly that receiving a large sum will cause him more harm than good. Some very specific pieces of jewellery to my great niece. And a bonus bequest if one of them gives my precious moggies a furever home.

Could you put your nephew’s share in trust at all? Then he’d still be able to have the money, just more controlled.

That’s what I’m thinking about doing in respect of my parents, given the age difference.
