Nanny bonus - how much?

Lishylooloo · 21/11/2009 13:42

We have a nanny working for us 2-3 days a week and I am wondering what we should give her as a Christmas bonus. Is there an appropriate amount? in terms of weeks? or a percentage of what she earns a year?

Thanks for an input!

Often a week's pay is given as a bonus, but there's no hard and fast rule.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/11/2009 13:57

i have always had a weeks salary

and very apprective of it as well

K75 · 21/11/2009 17:14

We give a week. Fairly "standard" in London.

greybird · 21/11/2009 18:47

Is this "standard" a week's gross salary, so that you pay tax&NI on it and the nanny gets a week's net salary?

argento · 21/11/2009 19:33

Normally a week's net in cash ime. That might not be strictly legal though I suppose.

K75 · 21/11/2009 19:40

Fair question; I pay it gross with tax etc; too risky for me if I was ever caught on the wrong side of this!!

I usually do £100 cash for birthday and £250 cash for xmas plus a present for each of about £30.

HTH

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/11/2009 11:51

a months gross

Lishylooloo · 22/11/2009 19:50

So anywhere between a week and a month... I suppose I should go with 2 weeks? Anyone else have any input...?

I'd say £200 would be fine - I'm sure your nanny would appreciate it. Could then spend it as they liked... on themselves, or paying bills!

chandellina · 22/11/2009 21:09

i am planning on a week's (3 day week) net for our nanny who started working for us in September. it's a share, so that will be £165.

lilylu22 · 22/11/2009 21:26

I got 2 weeks and a lovely gift (tiffany jewelry) that the children had chosen. I work for a very generous and lovely lady

TwoCupcakes · 25/11/2009 14:04

my nanny just started 9 weeks ago so i'm not giving her a week's bonus. (would have if she has been with us for a year or at least a better part of the year). i'm planning 2 days salary, but also giving her a nintendo wii which i know she wants and which will cost me nearly £200 for the full package. and of course couple of gifts from my DDs plus one or two stocking fillers.

i think it's nice to combine cash and presents and include the children in doing so - so give what you can afford and she/he would appreciate

one week's gross salary.
paid in cash.

greybird · 25/11/2009 14:28

It seems that most people give cash. Aren't cash presents taxable? What about goods, are they not taxable?

greybird · 25/11/2009 15:36

Did some research - seems all cash gifts are taxable and some non-cash presents are, too. NI liability vary according to the nature of the present. V complicated.

dooodle · 25/11/2009 16:57

I have been a nanny for years and its the thought that counts .

thenewbornnanny · 25/11/2009 17:58

I've usually got 1-2 weeks salary as a bonus, some years I got more, some less, dependent on the family's finances. I don't expect anything except gratitude for a job well done TBH. (although if I got given something from Tiffany I would be delighted LOL)

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/11/2009 11:38

twocupcakes -a wii and cash, thats very generous of you!!!

LouIsAWeetbixKid · 26/11/2009 13:24

Bonus? Bonus?
Never had one. Don't expect one. Don't get them in other jobs but I would LOVE one

jamaisjedors · 26/11/2009 13:33

(slight hijack) I can't remember how much I gave our childminder last year as a bonus - do you think she will be offended if it is less than last year?

I think we gave her quite a lot last year because she helped us so much after DS2's birth and also they were short of money because a close relative had died.

Am worried she will be offended or think we think less of her but can't for the life of me remember how much we gave her (100?? 150e?)

TwoCupcakes · 27/11/2009 16:56

Blondes, she's so good with my girls and often goes out of her way to help me in many ways, as i have quite a lot going on at work at the moment. so yes, wanted to show appreciation (took me ages to try and find out what she wanted for xmas without her figuring out what i was up to!). She can then practice the wii games at home and be good enough to beat my DD on our wii instead of being beaten hands down each time by DD! :-)

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/11/2009 19:47

bless you, you sound lovely

have to say my mb gets me lovely, well thought pressies as well as cash bonus
