New job!!!

I went for an interview at a private day nursery today. As I was waiting in the entrance area for the supervisor to come and see to me, I was very unsure if I wanted to work there. It seemed a little bleak and a few of the nursery nurses that walked past didn't smile, let alone acknowledge me.

Anyway, the interview went well. She asked lots of senario type questions, most of which I thought I answered well. At the end, she said she liked my personality and answers so well, she would like to offer me the job there and then and I accepted.

I went for a look around the nursery and the room I will be working in is small and nice. I will be working with another lady looking after 3 toddlers now, and 6 in June when some newcomers start.

I might as well give it a go I thought and so I start on Monday. I'm just a little frightened of the bitching that goes on in some nurseries.

By the way to all the other parents, how do u feel about nursery workers without CRB checks as I havent got one and will be working unsupervised with these babies. I think its a little attrocious.

it's so obvious this is a "fishing expedition" (especially by a brand new poster) for an article/other devious means, why not come out & say it? or are you too tight to pay the small fee that MN asks for when the media approaches MNers?

I am a regular poster jost decided to change my name. I am just interested what other parents think of nursery nurses without CRB checks, as I for one wouldnt be pleased if my sons nursery teachers weren't police checked.

I am a regular 21 yr old nanny/nursery nurse. If u dont believe me come on my msn messenger. Its not nice asking a question and getting someone barking down your throat thinking your a journalist. I'm a nanny - I dont expect to come on here and people be nasty to me!

no one was nasty to you. in fact i think i was very polite. and why on earth should i believe you on msn if i don't believe you on here?

plenty of people change their names to post on particular issues, but they normally say so at the start. if you know all about crb checks and have childcare qualifications/experience then you would normally supply a copy of your police check with your application. your post simply does not ring true and imo doesn't deserve even this response. sorry if that upsets you.

I have been a nanny for the past 4 years to a lovely family. They didnt want a CRB check and I just had a thought today. If my son was in nursery and some new staff came without a police check, I would be angry because u don't know them from anyone else. They could be anyone. Anyway, I am not a journalist (wish I was - i'd be a sight more well-off) but just wanted parents views on this too. I just thought it would be interesting to hear what other mums thought.

Why are you not CRB checked already?

sigh. I wouldn't want you looking after my children in either a nursery or my home without a police check. why is it different in a nursery? does that make you a "less safe" carer (in a nursery) without a police check than in someone's home without one?

Post crossed. I got my first job and was then CRB checked. I was not allowed to be with children alone and defo no toilet help etc allowed till CRB came through.

Hi Pinotmum, Thats what I found a little odd. Supervisor said I would be left alone immediately with children starting from monday. The other nurseries I worked in before nanny work, I never had sole charge of the wee ones til after my CRB came through.

That really shouldn't be allowed. Why don't you speak to the supervisor and say you are concerned that until your CRB check is approved you are left open to accusations, god forbid. I couldn't change a child's wet top after water play until all was in order and that's the way I wanted it iyswim.

Its often different in nurseries bundle because they require staff immediately and cannot wait for the police checks to come thru as they often take over a month. With parents, they usally plan in advance and so get a nanny checked before she starts sole-charge employment. My last employer must have been very trusting indeed.

No I dont have a CRB bundle. I had one 4/5 years ago but they expire after a certain period of time.

I think I will speak to my supervisor on Monday Pinotmum and ask to not have sole charge til it comes thru.

I personally would also have a word with the supervisor regarding CRBs, I also would not be happy having my DS looked after by people without CRBs.
As for the 'bitching' i think you will find it happens in most work places, certainly did in my last job, I ended up leaving because it was really bad but now a days I don't let it bother me, just ignore it if it happens.

hi i worked as a nanny for 16 yrs and never had a crb check.now as a childminder i have one.there are no set rules for nannies in your home!

is this nursery OFSTED registered? If it is then you HAVE to have a CRB done before you are left alone with any child. This could take up to 3 months and has taken longer and if you are caught by OFSTED being left with the children the nursery will more than likely be closed down. Also you will not be covered by the nurseries insurance if anything goes wrong and you were on your own with the children. I would refuse to be left alone until your employer has done the CRB check.
