Nannies: market rates (bit controversial)

Having read on another thread ("Paying Nannies when sick") gripes from UK nannies about jobs going to girls from accession countries who will work for less, (and do more in the way of housework), is this not just pushing the market rate down for qualified/experienced nannies?

I am not in UK, but I would look at it as providing more affordable childcare, provided you can find someone trustworthy and reliable. I lived in UK briefly about 4 years ago and a nanny friend of mine was earning GBP 25,000 and got a flat thrown in with it. This is more than I was earning at the time and could never have afforded this sort of money for someone to look after my children.

I am not suggesting slave labour from Central European girls, or paying them an au pair's "pocket money" for what is essentially a nanny job, but paying them a reasonable wage and providing free accommodation means that a lot of people, who could not afford a nanny or nursery fees, will probably be able to get back to work.

Of course, there will always be those who want a Norland nanny and can afford one, but it seems to me that your average Mum would welcome these Central Europeans with open arms...

I'll run and hide now...

no cod, today you are mistaken, today is not a good day for me so I am not in the mood really.

JoolsToo · 12/04/2005 18:26

why what's been going down? (as the youngsters say)

NannyJo · 12/04/2005 18:26

JT i love housework actually but i don't think i should spend my time doing parents duties ie their own cleaning etc because i am there to be with the children not stck them in front of tv to do it. in my last job i did 80% housework leaving very little time to interact with children. is that what you would want for your children. thats what i would class as an au0pairs role(i may be wrong) an thats why i'm a nanny!

snafu · 12/04/2005 18:27

cupboardy · 12/04/2005 18:29

russian spam artists that is, they last for months

JoolsToo · 12/04/2005 18:29

don't know much about childcare lark - I looked after my own kids - but I would have thought when employed you got a job description and told what was required of you - if housework didn't come into it, don't do it - simple

lou33 · 12/04/2005 18:29

especially if you dry them out

JoolsToo · 12/04/2005 18:30

you've lost me ..........

cupboardy · 12/04/2005 18:32

its cheaper than chicken

NannyJo · 12/04/2005 18:34

not quite that simple i like to stick with a famil cos it provides stability for the children. things just esculated from day one and added to the list of duties bit by bit. most of it was children related but it was all all so particular and had to be done in certain ways (even down to how clothes were folded and ironed in a certain way??) that it took alot of my time up. so technically it is all in the contract but in reality witht the thoroughness the list became as long as my arm. The expression 'running around like blua arse fly' comes to mind.

JoolsToo · 12/04/2005 18:35

move on to someone who is not so anal?

NannyJo · 12/04/2005 18:39

i'm on maternity leave now but will in future. Anal is good ord. sums it up well
