Thinking of touting myself out as a babysitter for New Years Eve, what to charge?

I don't normally come on this board so hello!

I was thinking that seeing as I have nothing better planned and generally loathe NYE that I might offer my services as a babysitter on the work newsgroup. How much do you think is reasonable to charge. I have no qualifications other than having a toddler of my own and babysitting as a teenager

i think the days are long gone where you could charge £200 an evening.
these days i wouldnt pay more than i normally do, £7.00 an hour.
what are you expecting?

Bumperlicious · 03/12/2008 21:52

Have no idea and it would probably be a work colleague so don't want to try and screw anyone! Just was wondering what was reasonable to expect. £50 for the night?

Were there ever days like that hifi?! I must have missed those!

ooh yes, was ridiculous a couple of years back.£50 is very reasonable i think.
maybe i was being a bit tight,£8.50 an hour.

hollyivypoppy34 · 03/12/2008 21:57

think rate at agency I use is someting like £6.50 per hour with minimum four hour charge for new years eve. Think £50 sounds reasonable

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/12/2008 22:04

i get asked many times by mummies who know me and my local agencey rings me

i personally wouldnt bs on NYE but i quoted double my normal rate (£10) and therefore £20 - family wanted 6-2 (8hrs) and told them would cost £160

famillies were happy with this, and i got them one of my friends

who now owes me comission and a HUGE drink

no way would i bs/nor my friends for £7ph/£50 a night

Bumperlicious · 03/12/2008 22:10

Why wouldn't you b/s on NYE or for £50 Blonde?

I'm not qualified at at all, just a mummy (just ).

Just want to make a bit of extra cash. It's no skin off my nose really, hopefully kids in bed, a DVD, bit of mumsnet, refrigerator privileges

not worth my while tbh

i can earn that on a normal night bs

but i can see why you or someone who wants some money would - rather than watch tv at yours, you might as well be paid for it

Bumperlicious · 03/12/2008 22:18

TBH I don't want to feed into the whole NYE frenzy of stupid prices as that's why even pre-DD I rarely went out, so I don't want to make it worse for people.

£50 for a normal night's BS sounds an awful lot, but fair play if you can earn that! I'll just stick to swopsies with friends!

This is really interesting as I am hoping to babysit NYE for some extra cash. I was thinking £8 per hour. Does this sound ok? I am a registered CM, have NVQ, first aid, CRb etc.

Won't be doing anything else NYE so thought I might as well!

southernbelle77 · 05/12/2008 06:38

I would charge at least £10 an hour babysitting on NYE. Not that I would do it (don't think DH would be to thrilled!) but if I was going to, that is the LEAST I would charge.

NumberFour · 05/12/2008 07:02

I babysat last NYE through an agency and they stated double rate. So I earned £80 that night. But the woman did not even have coffee in her house!!!!! I don't like tea.

I won't do it again, but I am glad I did it last year because we really needed that extra cash then.

I would say at least £50 for the night esp for friends.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 08:49

sorry didnt mean to start a bidding frenzy

i think as it is NYE you should charge double what you normally would - thats what all my local agencyies have said

choloe - £8 sounds really low - but again depends on your area

ring around agencies or put an ad up on gumtree/nannyjob etc and see if you get any requests

WewishyouaBUMPERLICIOUS · 05/12/2008 09:00

I don't think any of these prices apply to me an a non-professional.

Is it a very bad thing not to have coffee in your house then? because we don't.

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 10:20

opps, I advertised for £8 last night, maybe I should have put £10. £8 is probably low, I charge £5-6 on a normal night. I just though that as I NEED the money so need to work, I didn't want to go too high and not get any work from it!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 12:30

alter your ad now to at least £10 if you normally charge £5/6

bumperlicious - agree that you arent a professional, though you do have mummy experience which can be just as good

"I might offer my services as a babysitter on the work newsgroup"

what is this?

AbbaFan · 05/12/2008 13:01

I am working through Sitters on NYE, and the hourly rate is £12.50.

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 15:34

abbafan - which is about double their normal rate

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 18:44

Can I ask what out of that you get from sitters? Thinking of joining.

Is 21 their min age?

I remember trying to join years ago but wasn't old enough! Should be now though (almost 22)

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 19:26

honestly - i think sitters are crap, they pay crap money, and if you get cancelled then tough

on the other hand, they do normally offer plently of work, so if you need to bs a lot .....

info here

FrazzledFairyFay · 05/12/2008 19:30

We are having one of DD's nursery nurses. Two families sharing and she is charging £16 per hour, which I do think is expensive but she does have to look after a 4 month old baby, an 18 month old and 2 very lively just turned 3 yeaar olds so she's worth every penny!

WewishyouaBUMPERLICIOUS · 05/12/2008 20:04

A newsgroup? It's a little bit like a forum where people discuss things (not to MNet extent!) buy/sell things, advertise for wanted stuff. I will just stick a message on there offering my services.

What about if I said said £50 till 1 am then X amount per hour thereafter?

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/12/2008 20:19

depends what time you start - but yes if you need the money then offer away

southeastastra · 05/12/2008 20:20

hmm why not. i'll do it for £500 thanks

chloemegjess · 05/12/2008 22:11

Will join with sitters but looking at it, it is crap pay. But we really need the money i'm afraid.

I have upped my charge for NYE to £10 per hour and will try and advertise locally on netmums etc.

Do you get paid cash through sitters?

RachieB · 05/12/2008 23:32

yes the family pay you direct

i normally charge £6 - £7 per hour for babysitting, and if i were to do NYE i would want at least £10 an hour to be honest

though this is south wales where wages are lower than some
