does anyone know how much I'd need to pay a maternity nurse to cover nights on the arrival of my lo?

try nightnannies.co.uk -depends on where you are in teh country

MatNanPlus · 29/08/2008 20:18

It can be cheaper for a 24h MN in alot of cases, if you have the room as she is then available if you want a sleep etc. £10-15 per hr is fairly average.

horsygirl · 29/08/2008 20:23

That's interesting, yes we could kit a bedroom out for her no problem. But there'd be more than one nurse then, surely? would they come in shifts?

How sexist of me, assuming they're all female! Oops any sorry any men out there!

no she would do 24hrs and most do 5 or 6 days in a stretch i have done 24/4 thru to 24/7 or 24/13 in one job if there are problems.

How many days/24hrs would you like covered?

24h = £150ish depending on experience of said person, we are self employed so that is it times the number of days worked plus an agency fee tho there are people on Gumtree and NannyJob

horsygirl · 29/08/2008 20:42

crikey I would feel guilty having the same nurse on call 24hrs? Is that standard practice then?

I'm not planning on breastfeeding if I have to go it alone as I have only just stopped bf my 6 month old and I found the demand feeding that I did very demanding!

I know of a few good maternity nurses so if you CAT me what area you are in I might be able to help save you an agency fee

lindseyfox · 29/08/2008 20:57

Hello I work as a night nanny in the midlands and as a qualified childrens nurse with lots of newborn experience including hospital work with prem babies, twins and triplets. I charge £12 an hr for singles, £15 an hr for twins and £18 for triplets.

I have night nannied for families who have had a maternity nurse for a week or two and found that they didnt want someone 24hrs a day they just wanted help at night - basically some sleep!!

and some families have decided from the start dont need help in the day but def need my sleep.

When I night nanny I tend to do 2-3 nights a week one being a fri and often stay late on a sat morning so both mum and dad can have a lie-in and if older siblings ive dealt with them too.

One family booked me intially for 3wks and 7mth down the line still do 2 nights a month for them baby is in good routine but they like to go out, have a drink then have a lie-in knowing i am there for the children.

horsygirl · 29/08/2008 20:58

ok that's great! But what's CAT?

I'm in Stockport.

Hello Lindseyfox, do you or anyone you know cover my area? 2-3 nights would perhaps be ok as we are not mega rich or anything just knackered!

Stockport...hmmm that's the one area where I don't know anybody!

I know a great Mat Nurse who covers Herts & London but would only travel that far for a 24/3-4 cover I think!

Horsygirl go to search cv's on NJ, put in what you are looking for ie Night Nanny and then your area and a list will come up, you then register and can assess the cv's. Tho i am a member i still had to register to veiw cv's

dannyb · 02/09/2008 23:15

The lady that everyone around here uses is £75 a night for 10-7. If you are BF she wakes you to feed and then takes the baby away. I used to feed at 11 and then she woke me at 6 having given EBM in the night

lindseyfox · 03/09/2008 18:50

horsygirl no sorry i dont know anyone local to you.

You could try contacting the university job shop and seeing if a student childrens nurse or student teacher was interested obv they wouldnt have night nanny experience by student childrens nurse would have baby experience and you would be looking at paying about £6 an hr then.

otherwise for someone with some experience perhaps put an ad on gumtree or nannyjob, nannyjob have forums like this and maybe you could put a post on there asking if anyone knows of a night nanny in your area.

good luck, families ive night nannied for certainly havent been rich by any means and have just been desperate for sleep.
