Inset days

Two working teacher parents to (luckily) just one child. Child has started school this year and we are finding inset days impossible to manage. 5 per year, usual wraparound childcare is closed on insets as they mirror the school. No family less than 300 miles away, my mum has come up twice now but she won't be able to come up 5 times a year for the next however many years. As we are teachers working from home or requesting annual leave is impossible. We can take parental leave but that has to be in blocks of one week at a time so not helpful here.

Just posting in case someone has any grand ideas or suggestions I've not yet mentioned. Otherwise I guess it will have to be sick days? Not hugely helpful when I'm already managing chronic illness.

Anyone?

How do you feel about work experience teenagers coming in? We have at least 10 every year and yes they need escorting everywhere.

Well, you do get teenagers in secondary schools Wink but seriously, there is a bit of a difference between work experience and a five year old sitting in a secondary school for a day. I’m with the OP on this. I’ve been teaching since 2003 and I have not known any members of staff take their children into school. I DO remember doing it myself, but that was in the 1980s and a different age in all sorts of ways.

I meant a secondary in primary, not a primary going into secondary school. I agreed with the op that as not ok or appropriate.
I stated that some parents in my school (primary) had brought their secondary age child in when their school had inset. SLT didn't feel it was a problem and the teacher was responsible for their secondary aged child the entire day.
To be honest this is an issue that schools need to look at. We have 4 primary schools and 1 secondary school in the town I live in and other than Sept insets they are all on different days! You would think they could get organised and speak to each other about them.

Secondary is a bit different, although it potentially throws up other problems. Generally though I wouldn’t have thought your average secondary aged child would need supervision during the day. Different if SEN or similar I suppose.

I still can’t think of a single situation where a child should come to a school with their teacher parent. If they are secondary they can stay home, if they have additional needs they need someone focussed on them, if they’re primary they can’t possibly just sit in the back of a high school class for hours. I appreciate that if you own your own business or similar you might bring your child with you now and again, but surely that’s not typically allowed in most workplaces?

We are both secondary, at separate schools. He is in primary, so no it would not be appropriate to take him to school with us.

My sister and I got taken to school with our secondary school teacher parent in this circumstance?
