Would I get a Nanny to do this job?

And how much would I be expected to pay? We have four DC's 2-10yrs. At the moment it would be between 30 and 40hrs. In Sept the littlest would go to pre-sch in the morning, so the hours would reduce again and then in Jan the second youngest would go full-time sch. Then the following sept the littlest would go ft at the sch nursery 9-3 and Oldest would go to secondary sch so would need to have someone to come home (which is one of the factors into thinking about a nanny)....
I guess my last q's is how long do you normally retain nanny's for? I would hope to for at least 2.5 yrs??

the hours may reduce as children at school/nursery,but if you need your nanny to be on call, you will still have to pay her, so might be tricky to cut down hours/find someone who only wants am and then after school

not sure of nanny wages in cornwall, but def less than london

are the 30/40hrs set over 4/5 days

I like jobs which are long term. 3 to 5 years isn't uncommon for me. But some people may well not stay in a job that long.

You say the hours will reduce, that does not make the job appealing. While the children may be at pre-school/school, the nanny is still on call plus during holidays and school closures you may need childcare all day.

Could you get a full-time nanny and negotiate more household duties during times when the children are all at pre-school/school. Good time to do the kids ironing.

imananny · 04/04/2008 17:56

most full time or even part time nannies dont want to do extra household duties - we are nannies who look after children and not clean/tidy houses

or is that just me being fussy/unhelpful

Anna8888 · 04/04/2008 17:57

You can't expect a nanny (or any in-house employee) to fit their hours around an ever evolving family schedule. Nannies, like any other working person, want stability in their lives, whether that be full or part time.

imananny · 04/04/2008 17:57

sorry forgot to put - i also like long term jobs - babies to when they go to school (5yrs) is nice

NotABanana · 04/04/2008 17:58

I have stayed in one nanny job for 4 years (parents moved,) another for 1 1/2 yrs (mum gave up work) a mother's help job was for 6 months (parents were strange) au pair job 12 months (home sick)

Anna8888 · 04/04/2008 18:00

imananny - are you OK with doing child-related tasks (tidying their rooms, laundry, prepping meals) when your charges are at school?

TalkroundupElf · 04/04/2008 18:00

Can anyone top 10 years...thats how long i've now been with my current family

imananny · 04/04/2008 18:09

yes happy to do any NURSERY duties

though we are still trying to work out what that means

10 years - wow thats fab

mines 5 years

nannynick · 04/04/2008 18:11

Can't top 10 years... though I new someone who had been a nanny for a family for that long.
I've been babysitting for a family for 10.5 years now... does that count?

FrannyandZooey · 04/04/2008 18:13

I was with my last family for 10 years - the children now look after MY ds for me

when the youngest started preschool I used to still come in but do housework - tbh I didn't like this but appreciated the steady income

when she started school we arranged a nanny share with another local family - this worked reasonably well for the next few years

nannynick · 04/04/2008 18:16

Nursery duties - If anyone wants to contribute to what they feel 'Nursery Duties' actually means in reality, please do post your views over here.

I like jobs which last a good few years.

imananny · 04/04/2008 18:16

darn - pipped at post again by nick

baby sitting job been there 8.5 years

FrannyandZooey · 04/04/2008 18:18

had nagging doubt and actually counted
it was more like 8 years

nannynick · 04/04/2008 18:20

what's 2 years amongst friends

TheOriginalXENA · 04/04/2008 18:22

Yes I meant I wanted to beable to keep the nanny for along time but they would need to either reduce their hours or do more household duties.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should be looking to pay?

Am currently searching for another job though, as am bored silly with doing their housework/laundry/dogs body jobs whilst the children are at school

It's been fun though, even if mum isn't really of this planet most of the time

imananny · 04/04/2008 18:24

very true nick

TheOriginalXENA · 04/04/2008 18:26

talkroundupElf - that is what I am worried about

I have been doing this for them for about 3 years though, and just feel like i am becoming unskilled the longer i stay. I'll be really sad to leave my girls, but they will always be part of me and my life

I've had loads of responses through my gumtree ad though, plus i posted one on netmums, which has done quite well also

Someone out there must need a new Mary Poppins

I hope you manage to find someone soon to help you.

TheOriginalXENA · 04/04/2008 18:51

You don't fancy cornwall then Elf

Our first nanny stayed 10 years and brought her first baby to work when our youngest went to nursery school and then her second baby and then went part time except in school holidays and then left when she had her third.

The last one we had stayed from when the twins were about 1 (the nanny before got pregnant and left) until they started full time school at almost 5.
