Hi,

My husband leaves for work very early in the morning (6:35am). He is a teacher, there is no flexibility. Because of this, I do all of the nursery drop-offs for our 3yo DD. She is very settled at her nursery and we do not want to move her.

My career is being limited in certain kinds of progression because I cannot travel and stay overnight because nursery opens at 7:30am, an hour after DH catches his train. I am missing out and it is endlessly frustrating. I earn more than my DH, by some way. But his job is important too.

I need someone to come to our house at 6:25am and take DD to nursery for 8:30am.

We are in SE London. Does this exist? Where can I find it?

Any advice very much welcome!

A nanny or possibly some childminders will accommodate.

Merrow · 09/02/2024 19:37

Look on childcare.co.uk - we know a nanny that does ad-hoc drop offs as her working hours don't start until school pick up and all get availability is on her childcare profile.

Needmorelego · 09/02/2024 19:37

Yes - childminders. They often will give them breakfast then take them to nursery/school.
Edit : you would probably need to take your child to the childminder though. They wouldn't come to you.

Tulipvase · 09/02/2024 19:38

I know it’s not the point but that must be some hell of a commute for your husband!

ThreadLasso · 09/02/2024 19:44

Can't he just work in a school in walking distance and leave later?

SnowsFalling · 09/02/2024 19:55

On the occasions we needed that kind of help, one of the Grandparents came to stay for the week.

I guess it partially depends on how often you need to travel.

Would DH consider a closer school? I'm guessing he's doing 90mins each way - most teachers at my school get in after me, and I start at 8. Kids start arriving from 8.30.

Smartiepants79 · 09/02/2024 20:07

Your DH needs to work closer to your home.
It’s not going to be a popular opinion here but I’m feeling a tiny bit sad for the 3 year old in all this. It’s not how I’d choose to live my life or the life I’d choose for my child.

PuttingDownRoots · 09/02/2024 20:11

Teachers can't just change jobs, he's likely in contract now until July!

Does she start school this year or next? If next year .. I'd look for childcare nearer DHs job tbh.

mirror245 · 09/02/2024 20:33

Move closer to dh work or him change jobs. He does leave very early. Are there no local jobs?

Elpheba · 09/02/2024 20:37

Definitely worth posting on childcare.co.uk- especially if you need 5 days a week as it’s an alright amount of hours.

And take a 3 year old on the train with him?

Not sure how childcare near his work will help?

saraclara · 09/02/2024 20:43

I can't help thinking that that would be a really good job for someone (who is a morning person). If they came to you and charged nanny rates, they'd get a decent amount for their 10 hours a week without it impacting the rest of their day. So they could get/have another job that started later, or if they just wanted a smaller income, they'd be free to do what they want for the rest of the day with no commitments.

So yep, I'd advertise it on the site/s that people have suggested.

GreenTurtle75 · 09/02/2024 21:19

I don’t understand all these replies telling you to move or DH to change job like those are simple and easy answers 😂.

There are certainly childminders who do wraparound care. A couple of childminders near me drop off children at my son’s nursery (SW London). They’d likely want to have it as a regular commitment as that makes working out ratios easier, but if overnight opportunities are regular, you may find this convenient.

These comments 😂 why are people shocked at the early start or commute for a teacher?!

I work at a school and not many are in before 8am, so that would mean a 90 min commute. I think that’s a fair commute? Mine is a large primary, perhaps secondary is different.

romdowa · 09/02/2024 21:28

My friend does this , she goes to their house early in the morning, gets the child up, dressed and ready for school and then takes them to school. Its a handy gig for her

PuttingDownRoots · 09/02/2024 21:30

@Tulipvase DDs secondary opens to pupils at 8am! Form time is 8.35. Most teachers are there by then.

What? Most teachers care in by 7.30 at mine, some are in earlier.

NotmyfirstRodeomyfriend · 09/02/2024 21:31

Maybe he's SLT?

I don't think the point of the post is to question why her husband needs to leave so early and suggest just moving school like it's something you can easily do... would entirely depend on his subject, his TLR... yes it's unusual for such a long commute? Maybe he's in London?

The point of the post is about childcare

lavenderlou · 09/02/2024 21:35

I am a teacher and think it would also be better if your DH worked nearer home. Teaching jobs have a good level of flexibility around location. I leave the house at 8 - I deliberately found a job close to home because of childcare. I work as much as I can at home rather than at school so I don't have to be in too early.

Teaching jobs are ten a penny in most places at the moment and it wouldn't be impossible to be out by Easter as the resignation date is end of February. More realistic for him to spend time looking for something to start September though.

Because schools are everywhere, particularly in London, and they're all crying out for teachers?

NotmyfirstRodeomyfriend · 09/02/2024 21:41

@ThreadLasso maybe he doesn't want to just work in a ten a Penny school? The teachers that are getting into school gone 8am are not like the teachers I know 🤷🏼‍♀️

Rainbowunicornsparkle · 09/02/2024 21:41

I know childminders offer wraparound care, but at 625 am?!

Boomboom22 · 09/02/2024 21:44

Why does he leave so early? Many teachers have kids. I drop mine at 7.45 and get to work for 8.30, then reg is 8.45. Previous schools were 8.10 and reg at 8.30. Surely he could be closer to when the kids arrive when you have work away!

Runningonempty01 · 09/02/2024 21:45

Getting a teaching job in a good school, especially in a non shortage subject can be very competitive. There are always lots great candidates for jobs where I work and lots of people who commute quite a way. Teaching is one of those jobs where if you are actually in a good school with supportive SLT you would be insane to move. The op is asking for creative child care solutions nor changes to her husband job!
